Angry Equus 8068 Tachometer is bad news

I purchased an Equus 8068 tach after reading that they were good for single cylinder engines, which I have, a clone 430 cc. The tach read normal at idle of 1600 RPM, but when I increased the speed to approximately 3000 RPM the needle pinned at 8K. After about a minute running the needle would swing rapidly and violently between zero and 8K. It then quit giving any indication at all. Called the Technical Support and their response was "We don't warrant the tachometer on magneto ignition systems. Sorry....Goodbye."
Now this just ain't right.

I was interested in getting that tach. I'm assuming you had it hooked up with the induction sensor clamped around the spark plug lead, and the DC coming from the mag/stator? (I apologize for my lack of terms/knowledge)

Thanks

Did you clip the ears off of the inductive pickup as noted in the instructions?

Did you set it correctly for a single cylinder?

I've installed at least 15 haven't had a bad one yet.

I don't remember the ear clipping procedure. I will reread the instructions and try. They still should not have blown me off with a comment as they did. I am using a battery and alternator...that was my 12vdc source.

Some people including me had to put a plug wire extension on so the pick-up would work.

Ear clipping? Wire extension? Please elaborate, I have the same tach and it's on again off again.

You're not using the inductive pick-up?

Sometimes there isn't enough plug wire to properly fit in the pick-up. I modified the plug boot and had to sleeve the plug wire with clear vinyl tubing--notched for the pick-up--to make the wire snug.

Inductive pickups are like that, they get confused from other wires or the same wire if it is short or curved near the pickup. I had a clampon test tach and kept a 4' long wire with a modded plug, I could take a plug wire off and put this on the wire so it was much longer. It got the tach away from the engine and then it worked great.

Also note on the pick up one end should go towards the spark plug side.
