Default Vanguard noise level

Ok after you are done laughing then please answer. What noise levels are expected in going with a big block choice? My wife and I like riding the trails on our property at night and sometimes late. There are some spots that are close to our neighboors houses so I feel it is only polite to make sure we do not wake them.

They can be very loud or very quiet. Just depends on the exhaust. I like them quiet, but with a little throaty tone to them.

I've used a stock Briggs rectangular muffler that was pretty quiet. I don't think any of the options will be quiet enough to not wake the neighbors when you cruise past their house though. Even a stock golf cart would wake me up.

The stock Yammy engine seems to be fine. I don't expect it to end up as quiet. Just as long as it is fairly close.

It all depends on what effort you put into the exhaust system IMHO. The engines themselves (lawn based air coooled) seem to be similar and only have a little vlavetrain noise, but my stock G9 had a little too. You need an airbox to cut intake noise down. But the exhaust is the hardest part none of the lawn mufflers are that quiet compared to a stock GC. The stock GC are too restrictive unless you ran two parallel maybe. Some use generator mufflers they tend to be better, such as ones used in 5th wheels or high dollar generators that are quiet. You can try a car muffler. Note that longer tailpipes are usually quieter. Should have a 1" for a clone I would guess larger for a vtwin maybe 1 1/8 or 1 1/4. It can eventually burn the exhaust valves if you have restrictive exhaust and will cut power output. One muffler I used that was quiet was off a 45hp diesel lawnmower, a commercial unit, wish I still had it not sure where it went. Think someone borrowed it to use on a generator.

On the other hand I would like to put a valve on mine as it has no tailpipe I am sure would help my car muffler. Just close off the outlet and make it use a tailpipe possibly with another small muffler on that. Could use that at night. I like the open car muffler I use for trails it is like a quiet atv, maybe like a larger single cylinder lawnmower. It is near stock quiet at 1/4 throttle and less only gets loud when you step on it, again its not that loud more like a lawnmower but sounds like a little deeper tone to me when I hammer it.

I have no proof but suspect large singles are harder to make quiet than twin engines, that is my experience being around a lot of lawn type equipment. You can make it quiet if you put the work into it, you may have to try different setups, research what worked for others, there is no (that I know of) muffler you can up and buy that is quiet as stock GC other than paralleling two of them maybe. You may end up with a large muffler/exhaust. Note a stock GC muffler is larger and heavy and possibly restrictive even on the stock engine. But it can be done.

Although video is different than being in person, I was curious to know the same thing on quietness. Here is a topic of mine asking for various videos. Good area to listen to some different setups.

I'm experimenting with an atv muffler. It's fairly quiet compared to the high flow mufflers out there, but not stock yamaha quiet. I would think you would do well with a stock Vanguard muffler, add a tailpipe to it and make a baffle toward the end that can be removed. Some atv guys use a slip on deal for hunting. It uses a high temp silicone hose to mount to the existing muffler/tailpipe. Slip it on at night, remove when done. These add on mufflers have been said to quiet an additional 26 db vs. a stock atv. Most stock atv's are in the 88 db at 2000 rpm at 2 feet behind and 2 feet above. I've had run ins with the local sherrifs office over sound, that's how they measure it. Ohio DNR also measures it very similarly. My clone with high flow go kart muffler was 106 db.....no good! Now it's closer to the 90 db range. It's amazing how much 5-10 db makes. My generator is a "quiet version" and it's around 70 db. A Honda Accord is 79 db just for reference. I've played around with this quite a bit. I'd think you want to be less than 80 db to be "quiet".
