Comet 780 questions/help
Seems like lots of guys are running the Comet 780 now, so I'm looking for some info please. I'm considering switching to this clutch for better engagement and shift profile, just not getting what I want out of my 94c.
1. What is the engagement rpm? 2. What is the full shift rpm? 3. How easy are they to adjust/modify/tune? 4. How much room on the crank do I need for the clutch and a pulley? 5. Are using these clutches really like "Adding 5 hp?". Why? I have used the stock G1 (older style) clutch, and it's super smooth. It has the roller bearing on the center shaft and it's in really good condition so it works really well. But it just engages and shifts too soon for my engine. I am currently using the G1 94c style clutch from CPP. It works just like a Duster 94c, uses all the same parts, but it's a clone made when Comet was not in operation. It works well, but I just can't seem to get it tuned where I want it. There are too many combinations, and every little thing that is changed makes it different. I'm sure I can eventually get it to do what I want, but right now I'm on at least the 12-13th different spring/puck combo. Just getting tired of it. It's as close now as it's ever been and works well enough to use it. What I'm looking for is this: Engagement speed at 2000 rpm. Full shift at 4000-4500 rpm WOT. The peak power on this engine of mine is right at 3200 rpm and it pulls excellent up until 5500 rpm. When going up steep or long hills the clutches backshift and the rpm hold at 3200 rpm no matter what the speed. It will climb any hill that way, just maybe at a lower mph speed, but it does great. So that's why I say the peak power is at 3200 rpm. Not sure the full shift though? Would I want an early full shift or a late full shift for more quickness? I use the cart for working at low rpm/speed around the house pulling smaller trailers around and hauling dirt/firewood. So I need a good low gear. But what I want is excellent acceleration up to say 35mph. Right now the cart does ok, but I know it's being held back by the clutches a little. Seems like it's shifting to fast and slows it down in the middle. Top speed right now is around 39.7 mph at 5900 rpm. My carb dies after that....working on that. But 40 mph is fast enough for me anyway. Not really looking to go faster than that. Any help and input is appreciated! |

Re: Comet 780 questions/help
Anyone? I would have thought a lot of people would reply to this. Guess the 780 isn't as popular as I thought.

Re: Comet 780 questions/help
The 780 should engage at 16-1700 depending on the setup.
Should fully shift by 3900. Tuning is accomplished by springs and roller weights. However, you can drill out the rivet holding the roller and replace it with a bolt and add a few washers to tune the shift out. |
