Bad Cam
I have a 16hp vanguard. It has been rebuilt with new pistons, rings, bearings, seals, performance cam, isky springs, billet rods. It has less than 20hrs on it and the exhaust lobes on the cam got ground off somehow. Everything else inside looks great still. I called Tom at CPP where I bought the cam, springs, rods from and Tom said he has sold and installed thousands of these cams and never had an issue and isnt willing to do anything with it, he said he would have to call Briggs and see what they say because thats where he buys the cams from and then has them ground to CPP spec. I am pretty angry and disappointed that a $219 cam lasted less than 20hrs.
1. Any ideas on what happen to my cam? 2. Where do you recommend I buy my new cam from, and ALL future parts? |

Re: Bad Cam
Can't really tell much from the pics because they are blurry. What is the discoloration on the bearing surface?( on the non-gear end of the cam)

Re: Bad Cam
Looks like it took the int. and ex. lobes off of #2 cylinder. I feel your pain it happened to me not to long ago I got #1 exhaust lobe. Thankfully pvt took care of my cam shaft.

Re: Bad Cam
Did you lube everything up when you installed the cam?
What do the tappets look like? Can you determine how much wear is on the lobes? Did you check for interference between the case and the cam during install? Any signs of wear on the case where the cam lobes pass by the cylinder walls? |

Re: Bad Cam
The tappets all look pretty good, no chips, not rough, no groves, and they move freely. Everything was lubed while assembling. I don't see any marks on the case from the cam, and 80% or more of the lobes are gone. I think it slowly worn away
