Default General question

For those of you have done this swap outside of Rifter, what is the average size of bike you all are putting into your cart? Are you happy with the overall performance, would like to hear your opinions.

If you have choice, get a twin sport bike, they are built for touring so mid range power is way better and you wont want to spin that thing to daily drive. Mine has a ex500 50 hp engine and i have all the power i need and more.

I hear the ambient twist of steel wheels turning,...

I know mine is not a bike motor but thought I'd share. My motor is the rancher 350cc(5 forward gears) which is around 11 hp. It's plenty strong but the more "cow bells" I add the slower it gets. On the atv side of the builds I don't know if I'd go smaller than 300cc.

I don't believe I would have the knowledge to pull off a motorcycle swap but an ATV one does interest me. I have to me the perfect cart sitting in the barn that would work for this, i was thinking min of a 500c size.

I have followed a lot of your builds and I know it would be a 5 star project.

If or when I build another atv/cart it will be at least 500cc with 4 wheel independent suspension.

I agree with Unforgiven, if I do ever build another radical cart it will have an ATV engine and running gear. My 1000CC Bike engine was just way too much, the power was unmanageable and dangerous.

I also recommend an atv 300cc and up.
Auto clutch, reverse, heavy suspension, Strong brakes, NO CHAIN, less fab work.
Mount it and run the controls.

Although i have always wanted to build what a buddy built years ago. He called it his rhino killer but that was prior to the razr.
Geo metro 3 cylinder automatic with a turbo kit. Getting pretty hard to find nowadays.
Lopped off and mounted in the rear with a rail front suspension.
Not sure how such a thing would fair today against these supercharged razrs. Probably fair. His was in the 950lb range with 110 crank hp 68 or so at the wheels.

Ya the metro thing is way more then I believe I would want to take on, I know where my limits lie. I could build this thing out of wood then I would be golden but doing it with metal that's another story.

I think the 500cc size with all the frame and rear end would be the way to go, brakes linkage are all setup. I would need to worry about the front brakes as well and rerouting of the gas and brakes so there will be some work involved. I would also think that since this in a cart instead of the normal ATV setup rear brakes would need to be addressed for the added weight.... Like as stated in OP I am just looking and it has been on my mind lately. The main problem I will face as I have been looking is finding the donar ATV, not too many wrecked ones to pull from in the area I live in.

sportster/ buell 1203 would be a good engine. You would have plenty of torque if that's what your after, and its small in size compared to an jap inline-4, and they make chain conversions for the front pulley

Polaris 500 would make a good swap, someone did one recently, used the suspension and everything, pretty cool.

Really, any 500cc and up atv with a cvt would be killer. The wiring sometimes is the part that challenges everyone, since there isn't any "swap guide" out there. Its time consuming trying to figure out all the little "needs and don't needs".

Most atv's go like this:

300cc = 15-20hp / 25-28 lb ft
400cc = 20-25hp / 25-30 lb ft
500cc = 30-35hp / 40-45 lb ft
600cc = 40-45hp / 50-55 lb ft
700cc = 45-50hp / 60-65 lb ft

Note: this is not exact, just an estimate from my experience. Most are single cylinder engines and have big torque. The twins will be smoother and also have gobs of torque. Atv engines were made with off road in mind so the powerband is low/mid in most, great for golf carts. Don't expect top speed to be the same as the atv though, unless you also use the driven clutch and same size tires, even then the transaxle will be the limiting factor on top speed. Wheel spins will be easy though!
