3 Wheel Cart ATV Conversion
I'm looking to do an ATV cart conversion. I've been looking for donor carts and ATVS for a while. There is a local shop selling an 80s Melex 3 wheel electric cart for $100 and I've been trying to figure out if it's a suitable donor. I've been reading a bunch of the post in this section, but haven't seen mention one way or another.
So, would there be much issue with using a 3 wheel cart with the front suspension off an ATV? I've read that converting a 3 wheel cart to 4 wheel is a pain, but if I'm using the complete front end off a 4 wheeler and weld it to the cart chassis, this should b no different than if I were to get a 4 wheel cart and do the same thing, correct? Or is there some reason I should try to find a 4 wheel cart instead? |

Re: 3 Wheel Cart ATV Conversion
First off Welcome to BGW,....
3 wheel cart to 4 wheel conversion. Yes It can be done. It has been done. One thing to think of is that some of the 3 wheel cart was tiller steer. So you would need a steering column, rack and pinion. I put an ATV front under my 94 ezgo. I used the stock steering arm. I'm planning on replacing it with a rack and pinion setup this summer. I don't know what your budget is but if it was myself I'd hold out for a good 4 wheel donor. |

Re: 3 Wheel Cart ATV Conversion
Thanks for the welcome! I've read your build thread, it turned out great!
This particular cart has a steering wheel / steering column, with the steering wheel mounted on the left side, so I should be able to use that. My question really is whether or not the chassis up front would be any different on this 3 wheeled cart vs a 4 wheeled one. Once I got the front wheel / forks / suspension torn out, I'm wondering if the remaining chassis would be any different than if I removed the front suspension / wheels from a 4 wheeled cart so that I could weld in an ATV front end to it? |

Re: 3 Wheel Cart ATV Conversion
As long as it's something rigid like the frame or cross member to attach it to. I made some plates that bolted into the lower spring mount on both my Marathon and Cushman. (they was basically the same setup) on the top I mounted the shock towers to a cross member. This is the Cushman. I painted the Honda foreman frame, so it shows up better.

Re: 3 Wheel Cart ATV Conversion
Thanks for the info. I've seen that thread where Roady built his own suspension. That's more than I'd attempt to do. Going that route would open a can of worms, but hats off to him for trying. Using a complete atv front end seems infinitely more forgiving. I'm probably going to check out the cart and see if it's doable.
