Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
So here is the history (You like how I put the pics first so I get your attention?) I bought the Westy from a friend a couple of years ago. It needed new batteries, but otherwise it was in really good condition. These carts can go for a couple of thousand easily. Then after about a year and a half of fun and running around, we had a bad storm. The Chesapeake Bay decided to flood my yard, driveway, 2 cars and my golf cart! Then I realized the problem with having a unique cart...parts are not plentiful. I priced out rewinding the motor, new batteries, new solenoids, blah blah... 800.00 or more just to have a stock cart again!
Then you guys helped get my creative warped mind to thinking> convert to gas and run it like a buggy!! Lots of ideas and I finally came upon this one. Get a VFR 750, take out the engine put it in the Westy and have one bad *** cart that will pull any other cart off the beach! Now I've seen the 600's and 900's and other mods, but no one was doing a V4! I love these engines, ever since I saw a used 86 on the showroom floor (didn't have the money then). They are powerfull, smooth and most of all they are super dependable. There are plenty of motors with more torque and horsepower, but non of them are as smooth or as distinctly beautiful as the VF Motors from Honda. I hope to have this running by the end of Sept. and then tear down and repaint everything this fall. Lots of plans for a winch, heated cab and some great tunes too! And the best part is that with selling the extra parts off the bike, my cost to do this will be the steel for the subframe/swing arm, rear sprocket, axle, bearings and wheel adaptors. I'ts almost a free install (except I do drink a lot of beer). I'm keeping on schedule, doing something with this every weekend. So for today I'm really ahead with the motor dropped this morning and the cart and motor in the garage before 1 P.M. Tomorrow is grinding the cross brace off and setting the motor at it's install height in the cart. Then next week will be buying some 1x2 steel tubing and making the frame extensions, swing arm and spring/shock mounts!! |

Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
No work tonight, took the family out to dinner! Tomorrow should have the steel delivery...maybe Thursday at the latest. Break out a welder and I'll be having fun. Going with a very simple ladder frame design, using the 2X1.5 for the side rails, and 2x2 square tube for the cross beams front and rear, then 2x2 angle for the motor mounts. The rear will be horizontal for the through bolt at the rear of the motor, the front mounts will meet halfway up the motor at a couple of mount locations. The weight of the motor will assist in chain tension, so I only need the front mounts slotted so the rear can pivot.

Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
I saw your post, it will be a ton of fun when you are done! I'm going slow, but if the weather cools off, I should be on the road by the end of September. You can be first, but we'll both have a rare setup

Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
Delays again. Steel tubing is on its way, delivery on Tues., the last little parts for the axle (keys, nuts and retainers) will be here Wed. Looks like I'll be having a beer or two and watching the waves on the beach with the wife!
I guess I can use the old swing arm to practice welding on. |

Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
looking good man
What are you using for an axle? If mine shatters (using the factory ezgo axle) i havent really looked in to what else i could use. also, are you buying a welder or going to pay someone to do it? |

Re: VFR750 in my Westinghouse
oh, and where do you get your metal from?
I get all my stuff from Metal Supermarkets. Im lucky enough to have a store location close by. I just looked and they dont have a store in VA. Still might be worth calling for prices next time you need something. They are great to deal with and have had everything ive ever needed http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/ |
