Semi-Automatic for bike engines

I'm contemplating something like this.

There are other manufacturers that have some fancy control modules that could keep the kids out of the higher gears, and not worry about grinding or missing a shift. Just ease the clutch then everythng else is automatic. I know it sounds lazy, but the gee-whiz factor and not needing to fab a shifter and linkage are kind of pulling me in this direction.

I also thought about going that route. But I didn't like the price tag on those set-ups. I used heim joints and steel rod. I've got about $25 in mine. I always wanted to make an electric shifter.... those air ones will eventually run out of air power(unless you run a compressor).

Part of my plan involves a compressor, winch and sometow gear for getting broken carts off the beach. So, it might cost 10 times as much, but it would be handy. I will probably do it sometime later, just because.

I may be wrong but the idea of this kind of air shifters is all out drag racing, the engine kill will give the shifter a millisecond to shift to the next gear without using the clutch, you can program the module to the rpm you want to shift at to give yourself the quickest shifts possible. MPS is right here in north Orlando, I know several guys that use this air shifter and it works great I just don't know about leasure driving. Don't take my word for it ask the manufacturer, they might have a way so you can use it.

MPS has some nice stuff, and they have it programmable for up to 100msec kill for power shifts. Almost all the units work the same. I believe MPs uses MSD rpm chips in their setup and you can choose the shift point. As long as you keep a steady throttle and let the engine kill do its thing it should work even at 8K rpm and half throttle. It will be quick and there might be some jerking , but this is still just a dream for now.

How do shifter karts do it, or do the motocross trannies put up with it? I dig that hand shifter next to the wheel.

Seems like you could jackshaft a CVT clutch too, but then you would have to run a secondary and a cart trans might not handle it or you would have to buy a bunch more stuff. CVT is very easy on the drivetrain though.

we build a similar kind of air shifter for our race cars at school (Formula SAE competition) and they are awesome on the track when it comes to getting your lap times down. And it is going to be jerky when you are not full throttle.


And may God help you when you try to get it in neutral

I had an idea, put the upshift button under the gas pedal, and the downshift button under the clutch! Full throttle shifts would be perfect, and then use the clutch to downshift without a shifter! It might work...

Thats an interesting Idea. I like the down shift one, but the upshift one, wont it be trying to upshift as soon as you go WOT?

Need some paddle shifters lol. You can get controls for boats that are like a turn signal, they run the trim or jack plate up and down. They are not momentary but that could be done on the other end.
