Yamaha G1 motor swap questions
Hi guys I'm planning on putting a different motor in my g1. Questions, what kind of motor, being cheap, easy and maybe around 50+ hp can I use. Now I don't need to go crazy speeds like 80mph. I just need a more powerful motor to go trail riding with and keep up with my friends with quads.
Thanks. |

You first need to decide if you want chain drive (with gears and shifting) or a CVT drive (how the golf cart is, and how most all polaris atvs are).
There are a ton of great builds on here to help show you the pros and cons of each. -Sent from my Galaxy S3 |

Re: Yamaha G1 motor swap questions
Chain drive would be cool but how much more complicated than a regular drive?

With chain drive you could make an adapter to place a sprocket where your driven (rear) clutch on the golf is, or some people like to totally replace the rear axle with a solid one.

Re: Yamaha G1 motor swap questions
Easiest way is put a sled motor in with 50hp or so, say a 440 fan cooled. You still lose reverse unless the sled had reverse in the engine ignition system and ran backwards. Some did. People put bravo engines in G1 because you can fit the G1 crank pickup to it and retain reverse. They are about 25hp if you keep the pipe on it from the sled.
Some put bike motors in and use the trans, some use a solid axle. Could also transplant a whole engine and rear from an atv. |

I was going to also mention a sled motor, but the OP posted this under the bike and atv engine section.

Re: Yamaha G1 motor swap questions
Good point, they are easy due to having a CVT clutch on them but getting the pipe in there is a pain. How about a cvt ATV, makes a polaris atv engine much nicer for example. There are some of those swaps on here. They are getting old enough to be affordable.

Yeah the polaris atv motors are a good idea. I'm using a Polaris RZR S engine in mine. A bit expensive though. You would be better off to find a used sportsman 500, they are typically single cylinder engines and not to wide. For simplicity I would look for a carb model 500, that way you don't have as large of a wiring harness. I'm not sure but I believe you would also need a low pressure fuel pump.
