Default Paint issue. Help needed.

Hi all,

I'm getting a customers cart ready to paint and I'm having a strange issue.
The cart had been left in the sun and some of the finish was damaged. I wet sanded the bad spots and it seems like there is some kind of clear coat on the surface. I was able to feather it out with some wet/dry 400 grit.
I started shooting it with some tie-coat/bonding primer to give the paint a better grip on the plastic and everywhere there was an 'edge' between the top clear coat and the plastic underneath, the clear started to crinkle and melt. On the bare plastic, no problem, and on the areas where the clear was completely intact...no issues.
I tried just shooting a top coat of paint and had the same problem. Only in the areas where the clear was feathered out.
My personal cart never displayed any of these issues when I painted it. I'm kinda stumped.

The facts:
'95 CC DS
Factory plastic body with color through the plastic.
No signs of a repaint.
It is the plastic body, not fiberglass.

Anyone have similar problems? Any suggestions??

Thanks

Monte

Best guess is its rattle can clear, solvents tear into non catalyzed paints. Either you strip it off or cover it up with primer or epoxy/etc. It may wash off with naptha or enamel thinner hard to say. If you cover it spray dry coats, use a lamp, etc. I use flexible primer on carts, sometimes the rattle can stuff, but it does not react to things in my experience.

If its not clear, I have the best luck with wiping them down with naptha, and make sure you wipe it off dry every inch before it dries. Some use alcohol. Reducer can soften the plastic, naptha can too if you leave it on there long. Of course, also good idea to wash it well before you start (easy one to forget or not have time for). I like to use dish soap it strips most things off, but hard to say exactly what is on the cart.

Thanks Sho...

I found that some red auto primer seems to stick and not react with the clear. Just working on the cowl now. The rear seems to have less sun damage. I hope to be able to just wipe it down with solvent and then prime... crossing fingers!
