Default Sanding after Primer with Bomb Cans?

I am curious how important sanding is after priming with bomb cans? The finish looks fairly smooth to me so I don't understand if this step is necessary.

This is a plastic body - (2008 Club Car DS)

My process so far has been this: (Followed sticky thread for painting plastic)

Sanding and scuffing up the paint. 220 grit first then maroon scotch brite
Filled in some scratches and gouges with filler
Sand the filler smooth
Wax and grease remover multiple times
3 coats of Rustoleum Adhesive Promoter using instructions on the can
3 coats of Rustoleum Primer and Filler using instructions on the can

Can I just move on to painting instead of sanding again?

Paint sticks to primer 2 ways, chemical and mechanical adhesion. Without sanding the primer you are limiting the mechanical adhesion. Short answer, wet sand with 400 grit and spray topcoat.

One more thing.... Don't sand the primer and then wait too long to paint. Paint within 24 hours of sanding sanding.

So i took your advice and wet sanded the whole thing, I am glad I did because it sure has turned out nice so far. I hope it doesn't change too much as it dries!

I am not so sure I like the paint color but it far exceeds the look scratched up and gouged plastic I had before.

Another question now is how necessary is the clearcoat??? Will bomb can spray paint hold up over time without a clearcoat?

I think you are good. If you want to clear it do it right away. The longer it cures the less chemical adhesion you have. Remember you're not using automotive grade products. If it lasts 2 or 3 years you're ahead. The better stuff ain't cheap. Also a pinstripe here and there will make a big difference.

I decided to leave it alone. It looks pretty good for now. Here is the finished product. Any suggestions on what to add next? I am looking at pinstripes and a replacement Club Car sticker for the front panel.

Thanks for the help!

I'm with you on the color, not very attractive, but, your cart looks very good.

I'm a little late on this but maybe someone will read it when they are painting their cart.

Sanding between each coat assures better bonding of each coat and also removes any dust or debris before applying another coat over it. I sand every coat, including the finish coat. The clear coat is what gives it the finished "wet" look and shine. It also helps to protect your finish from UVs and wear. Clear coat is the easiest coat to apply and to me, very important. I have seen several cars on the road that are very easy to see that they skipped the clear coat, I don't understand why, you already have the body prepped for paint and the clear coat gives it a much more professional finish look and will help make your paint last longer. Just my $0.02.
