Painted my Ezgo Black and is paint came out lumpy
First time painting so had/have some issues. I used summit hot rod black urethane paint and could not get my sprayer to spray right. The paint came out blotchy and rough. I put 4 coats of black but did not clear coat. Was not planning on clear coating since I wanted the satin look. This looks like bed liner coating. So should I just leave it like this since it the same all over or can I wait and let the paint cure and try and wet sand to get a smooth finish.
Not sure why it was spraying like this, tried adjusting spray gun but could not get a even spray. Was using the 70 degree and below paint and temps were high 60's but the humidity was higher today. |

Re: Painted my Ezgo Black and is paint came out lumpy
I tried all different settings on the air pressure. The primer spray fine once after I got the air pressure adjust but could not get the black to spray smooth. The paint may have been to thick not sure.
I am trying to decide if I want to leave it like is this since the texture is the same all over. I plan on selling this cart and like the look for a hunting cart. |

I hope someone can give me some good advice. Not sure what I should and I will be painting my fiber glass club cart this weekend using a metallic silver. Not sure how hard that will be.

what was the mixing on this . you said it was single stage and you got the paint from summit. have you called summit tech . when it comes to buying paint I always say buy from your local paint supplyer so if you have this problem they can help out . but if the paint is to thick then it might need to be reduced like 4:1:1 4 parts paint :1 part hardener :1 part reducer. I sale paint that mix 8:1:2 and I have one that mix 4:1:2

The paint was mixed 4:1 with Reducer as per Summit paint spec. I would have bought paint local but the cost would have Been doubled the price.

On a real note. I sale paint for a living. A quart of black single stage is 35 bucks a 1/2pint of hardner is 10 bucks and a quart 9f reducer is 12 bucks. Enuff to paint a whole cart body.

Re: Painted my Ezgo Black and is paint came out lumpy
It sounds like you mixed it per the mfg guidelines, so I'm thinking of 2 other scenarios that could have caused this.
1 - The spray tip on your gun. If the spray nozzle # is for primer and you use it for base coat, the 'droplets' can be too big and you won't get that fine spray that you were searching for. 2 - The temp range of your reducer. While you chose the correct reducer for the temp range for that day, I've found that if you go a range or two higher on the reducer it slows everything down and allows the paint droplets to 'flow out'. The term flow out simply means that the paint droplets spread out, connecting to each other and appear smooth. If the reducer is acting too fast, it will start the drying reaction before the droplets can 'flow out' and settle down. Thus, my theory is that you can have a very rough finish simply by spraying droplets that were too large, and using a reducer that allowed it to dry before the droplets could flow out. I'm not a painter either, so I'll wait to see what Master66 says as well! Oh, and I use my local PPG supplier exclusively - it costs more, but I've noticed a difference in paint cost vs quality even within the PPG lines! My supplier is excellent, and will recommend different products based on what I'm painting, prints the data sheets for me, tells me what I can mix together and what I can't, how to fix issues I've created - well worth the extra money to me. This is my latest project, a tri-coat, urethane based, pearl / metallic in white: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/body-...-sealer-9.html Last edited by aacorp; 12-15-2015 at 02:43 PM..
