Default Painting over existing decent paint.

I have an early 2000s darker blue EZGO that seems to have been professionally painted at some point in its life. The paint, although heavily scratched from driving through the woods, is in decent condition. There is only one spot about the size of a pencil eraser where the blue paint is chipped off from the original green body. I have two questions for the pros here...

1) Since the paint is adhering to the original body very well, am I OK to just scuff it up and go to town with the new paint?

2) I would like to go red with it. How much is the red going to be affected by the existing darker blue base?

Scuff it, prime it, paint it .
Primer will cover old paint.

Red doesn't cover very well so the blue will show through. If you spot prime the bad spots they will show. I would wet sand the body with 240 grit, prime it all over with 2K primer, wet sand with 400 and then shoot the red. Having said all that, I'm assuming you have or have access to a compressor and a spray gun.

Thanks for the tips. I figured the red wouldn't do well over the dark blue but I wasn't sure if sandwiching primer in between paint was a good idea. I was hoping to get a decent enough result with a rattle can to be happy. It's going to be a utility cart around the farm. So it doesn't have to be perfect.

There's a golf cart shop in the area that sells painted bodies for $349. I am definitely not a painter and would hate to spend a decent amount of money on good primer, paint and clear only to mess it up in my less-than-ideal conditions. If I were to spray it myself, what would I be looking at cost wise?

2k primer: $40.00 Qt.
Paint: $25.00-$75.00 Qt.
Clear: $37.00 Qt.
HF spraygun: $30.00
Cleaning, sanding ,prepping: 4 hours
Prime: 30 minutes.
Sand primer: 1 hour.
Base coat: 1.5 hours. I give extra flash time when it's cold.
If you laid base good then ,no sanding, go to next step. Otherwise start sanding. Another hour or 3.
Clear coat: 1 hour. If you laid clear to your likin, then you're done. If not, start sanding and buffing. Another hour or 5.
About $100.00 worth of paint and a day of your time if all goes well.
This is from my experience, others may differ. I'm no pro by any means.
