Plasti Dip or Single Stage Paint

Sorry to make another thread but i couldn't see how to edit my other one.

I started a project to paint my families golf cart to be used on a private cottage road. Body had a lot digs from it's life on the golf course so I sanded and used glazing filler to fix the digs. I am now to the point where I have to decide what way I would like paint. The cart body is sanded and ready for primer.

When I first set out on this this project my intentions were to use Plasti Dip because I thought it would be easier and I could have to sprayed in on over the digs without fixing the smaller ones. I also thought it would be cheaper and faster because I wouldn't have to pull it all apart to do it. I was worried that it wouldn't fill in the digs so i fixed them. Also decided to take all apart to do a better job. So I now know I need way more Plasti Dip than I original thought, not a super big deal as I'll just order a gallon or maybe stick with rattle cans if my spray guns are no good. I want to paint it nest weekend and get it done with but ordering the Plasti Dip would take a couple weeks to arrive and I could walk in tomorrow to get the single stage paint.

I was hoping there would be a large benefit to plasti dip but now I am starting to think I should just single stage paint it and be done with it. I read the sticky about paint a plastic cart and I am leaning towards that. I was hoping to avoid runs and dirt int he paint, I'm not pro at painting but i have painted a couple cars int he past that worked out good. But I have a couple questions about plasti dip....


Should I primer before using it, will it cover over the glazing filler that is redish?

Or should I use a couple coats of black or white of plasti dip as a primer.

How long will it last, can it be retouched if it gets a dig?

How long will it last, will it hold up for 5 to 6 years or am I going to be lucky to get a few years?


I know my process for single stage paint or even a base clear paint but I was hoping the Plasti Dip would be easier process and more durable in the long run but if I have to redo it in 3 years it's not worth the time.

If you are working on a "plastic" body there is only one way to do this. Once you've repaired holes, dents and dings, spray with adhesion promoter, now spray with primer, after primer you can spray pretty much what ever you want.

It's this prep work that is most important!!

The one can of plasti dip covered the hood but I think a second and even maybe a third would be need for good coverage. Based on that I'd say to do the whole cart it would easily be 12 to 15 cans.

I had a locally body man drop by my garage last night to possible spray it and he gave me a ton of good info and recommendations about how to prep and paint. it suggested a urethane primer and a single stage paint both int he Nason brand name and of course a ton of adhesive promoter. But had said the it would add up, I'd be into the paint and primer, hardener and reducer for about $300 Canadian and his time for another $250 to $350.

So I went to my auto parts store this morning to get the primer but started thinking this is way to much for a golf cart so i asked is there any cheaper ways to do this without totally cheaping out. I was directed tot he Dupli Color Paint Shop products. It's a lacquer that comes pre mixed so there's nothing extra to buy, I can do everything for half the price and spray it myself. It'd all about $30 bucks a quart. I was a little worried about the product but it reviewed well for what it is. I bought the primer but had to order the colour coat because they didn't have it in stock, my parents wanted a burnt orange/copper.

Down side to this is the primer isn't a high build and the body will need to be sanded with a lighter grit to have a good finish. Also have to use a clear but that's not a serious issue, just an extra step I wasn't planning for. I plan to do some more prep work this week and hopefully get it in primer by the weekend and maybe get some colour on it by late Sunday.

I'll update some pictures as it goes.

Well got everything in primer, paint and clear today. The dulicolor Paint Shop stuff is pretty good for what it is. I used 2 quart of primer, 2 colour coat and 1 clear. Barely had enough for the roof, really wasn't enough tho only got 1 heavy coat. Colour isn't my first choice but my mother picked it and it's really her cart so why not. It's a lot more orange than these pictures are showing. I have some orange peel effect but I am over all happy with it. It's been about 6 to 8 year since i last painted and I enjoy the process, I'm ready for the next one.

You need a minimum of four coats in order to get good peelability

The camo was in for 3 brutal years under the Arizona sun and the kids blasting through the desert. Never a real problem. In fact, I would have been pissed if real paint was scratched or chipped. Peeled and painted a new color.
