I'm not a Painter but....
Hello,
I've got a standard off white CC and I would like to paint it. I don't know jack about painting, so I've got a couple of questions... 1. Can I sand it down with an air sander, etc.? Start with like 100 grit paper and work my way up to what? Will this take the paint off, or should I do something different? 2. What to use to fill the bigger gouges? 3. Can you get a decent looking paint job using rattlecans? I know that spray paint has come a long ways in recent years, but what to use? Can you use rattlecan clear on top of? 4. Or am I better off taking it to someone to shoot the color and clear, automotive style? Sorry for the book........ Thanks, Ed |

There quite a few members here that have rattle canned a couple of coats of color and a couple of coats of clear. They seem happy with their work. I guess it all depends on your prep, painting and level of acceptance.

I wouldn't use 100 grit unless body is real rough. I would start with 220 -320 or so. Did you read the other threads in this category?

Re: I'm not a Painter but....
Yeah I did look at some of the threads, but I didn't see where it talked about taking a basically stock cart body and ...........
I started on it today, using 150 grit paper and a $35 Black and Decker orbital sander I bought from Menards. My questions about the paint stem from the fact that I am not an automotive body technician, nor do I own a paint gun, yet I want a quality paint job and am trying to determine if I can get that with spray cans or if I need to take it somewhere. I'm not putting the cart in the next SEMA show, but would like it to look decent. Painting is not my forte, but hell I'll try anything once. |

Re: I'm not a Painter but....
Man 150 is going to be way to coarse! I am a painter at a shop that paints the big Nascar haulers, and I have wrked at a few body shops, so if you need any help, would be glad to help. To start with, I would not use a rattle can, if you want a nice job, I am sure that there are guys out there that have got some nice results by doingit this way, but it would be very hard. If you started with 150, you will have to either prime it, and then sand the primer with 320 grit paper. (this is what I would do) Or.... you could try going over the 150. with something like 220 grit paper, and then go over that with 320 grit. After that, to get the bet results, you should spray a sealer ove the whole thing, before you spray the paint. If you have any questions, let me know, and I wil try and help you the best I can.

if its molded plastic dont sand it with anything coarser than 320 it will fuss up and make a mess. if its in good shape go to napa and get martin sienor 7223 adhesion promoter wash it with soap and water, and then rubbing alcohol, scuff sand with a gray scuff pad or 600 grit. spray the ap, follow the directions and primer. jim i am a painter
