Painting the Top Help
I have a 1986 marathon with a plastic top and the top is in need of painting to match the newly painted body. Can I use rattle can paint on this and if so what kind & what do I need to do to make sure the paint adheres without flaking off?
Thanks everyone for your help |

Re: Painting the Top Help
You need to get it really clean and the use a spray paint made just for plastic.

Re: Painting the Top Help
Once you get it really clean you need to wipe it with alcohol. Then spray it with bullydog adhesion promoter. That stuff works miracles. Follow the directions and then paint. By the way where are the pics of the newly painted body?

Re: Painting the Top Help
Do I need to sand it before cleaning and painting it? If so what would you recommend? The reason I am asking is because someone had painted it before and after I pressure washed it, there are still some spots on the old paint left. And I am not sure what to do about those or is it ok to leave it and paint over it? I am going to go by and see about finding some bullydog, hopefully I can find it around here. Can I use Krylon Fusion for Plastic to paint the top with? I have not been able to paint the body as of yet due to the rainy weather but hopefully it will be completed then and I will upload some pics.
Thanks everyone for your help and advice. |

Re: Painting the Top Help
Whatever you do will only 'help' in the amount of time that will pass before it flakes off.
Basically - It WILL flake of over time no matter what you do... |

Re: Painting the Top Help
If it's been painted before and flaking off now, I'd try and sand the old paint off. If it's not holding, then when you repaint it, it will come off also. I'm gonna use the krylon fusion paint on mine but mine hasn't been painted before.

Re: Painting the Top Help
The new fusion type plastic paints make a chemical bond into the plastic ..... they are not coming off. You must start with clean plastic, not old paint.
