Painting flames...need advice.
I have a repaint going on right now and let me say first that I am no painter. However, after sandblasting the panels, extensive reshaping and bondo work, and primering, I am now ready to spray my metalic blue single stage paint. I plan on also laying out some flames with the 1/8th thin blue plastic tape and masking the rest.
My main question is what are you tips for actually painting the flames? I plan on going with either white or silver, single stage. Do I need to resand the original blue again? How do you keep the flames from forming a ridge where the masking is? I do not want to pinstripe the flames as I don't think I have the ability to do that. Any advice is welcome. Thanks |

Re: Painting flames...need advice.
We have done the same thing for some of our customers quick flame jobs require you to pull the tape while the paint is still wet it leaves a smoother edge if you dont want to feel any lip or edge you are going to have to clear it then wet sand it then repeat until its smooth. So if youo dont want to do that you are probably going to end up pin striping it. If you can lay out the flames then you can surely stripe it. Just remember that most striping tape has a clear cover over it and it is cheaper to buy it setup for car side striping and just use the thiner and save the thicker for the kids.

Thanks for the advice, one question on the striping tape though. How would you do the tips to make them into a point? Just cut it with a razorblade?

In order to get a clean/sharp flame tip, make a double cut on the tape and pull off the excess on top and bottom.

Re: Painting flames...need advice.
You should be doing a basecoat/clear coat 2stage system for doing special stuff like that.. Trust me its 100x easer then mucking around with a single stage.
Now dont get me wrong, single stage paints work great for "Single stage" jobs. I first started off with using single stage paints, and when done right, you can get a very nice clear finish. But when overlaying more then one colour, a 2 stage system is what you want to do. The benifit to a 2 stage is that you apply your clear overtop all your base layers, where as a single stage with a integrated reducer has the clear all in one step, making it more difficult to apply more colours with even clear and proper adhesion But give your single stage a try, im sure it will turn out great either way. just make sure you follow the TDS sheets to a t, and get your flash times, and temps rights. What type of paint are you using (brand), ive used Sherman Williams automotive western single stage paints, and they work great! |
