Painting and prepping Chassis/Frame ezgo txt

Yo,

So I finally have my rustbucket 90% free of rust. What a pain in the butt :) Anyway, I've used barrel sanders, grinders, and lastly 36 grit sanding discs.

I need to paint the thing obviously, so how do I do it? I have seen some stuff for rust bullet primer and POR15. I have no experience in painting/preping/etc....just know how to fab stuff.

How fine do I sand the chassis? What primer to use? How many coats? wet sand? etc etc etc

I can get pics up in a couple of days

It all depends upon what you want in the end...... If it is a show piece then yeah, by all means, wet sand the frame But if I was building a cart to use and starting with a rusty frame? Try to get it down to clean metal and sand with some finer 100 - 150 grit paper then I would go with a couple of coats Rustoleum primer. I think it is wet sandable but, most of all it will penetrate the remaining rust and allow paint to bond... Rustoleum makes some good top coats too. good luck.

Is taking it to a paint shop with a bead blaster an option? All the rust will be gone. Also I always use a torch to get the metal surface warm. Helps to get the moisture out of the metal that could cause rust later. Good luck.

so if the frame is the only thing you are interested in this is an easy one, POR15 is the paint for you. You can apply it with a brush and it smoothes out to a nice shiny smooth finish.Make sure you read the label because they have some warnings on there and they are not kidding, if you get it on you're skin and let it dry it WILL NOT come off ! Also if you put the lid back on when you are done for the day with paint on the edges you will not get it off the next day. I have used this stuff quite a bit and it is awsome for frames, good luck and let us know how she goes.

Sorry forgot about the prep.The only thing you need to do with this stuff is make sure you wipe the frame down with a good wax and grease remover before applying the paint. With the wax and grease try not to drench it and to dry it by wiping again after you apply it .I don't know a ton about carts but painting is the one thing I do know about.

I'm so glad we live in relatively rust free enviroment (...did I say that outloud? .... Um, forget I said that. It's a secret about the SW.)

Oh it's nasty, it took about three days for the black spot to come off my forehead that apparantly I had wiped. It is as hard as a rock though and you can use the paint brush too .
Yeah as far as the rust free environment goes not so much around here,the problem is painting over the moss and getting it to look smooth.

Ya I just want it to take care of the rust (stop it from forming) and look semi decent...It doesn't have to be a showpiece or anything, just not look like crap when you look at it from underneath. I will get some pictures up in the next hour or two

POR15 is designed to paint right over rust and it will definately control it, that is why there isn't really a whole lot of prep work before painting.
