For masking flames use blue 1/16th or 1/8th 3M fineline tape, the only cutting you should be doing on the new paint is the tips of the flames. If you are cutting on the new paint and score it to much the clear could get under it and make it lift.

I couldn't watch the vid here at work, but will watch when I get home.... I intended to use pin stripe for the flame outline, then lay down transfer paper, cut through the TP (since you can see through it) and pull up the paintable portion of the TP. But since my wife didn't bring home any TP, I just laid out the flames with 1/4" pinstripe and taped everything I didn't want to paint. I also hired my little girl to help fill in with the tape. That cut the taping in half. I made NO cuts on the paint itself. The way I laid my flames out, I never had to touch the cart with the blade. | |

It's great having a helper. I used to have 5 little helpers and the older they get the less help they are. ![]() Do I see a silver/gray ghost flame on the Jeep in your future?

Okay.. someone can tell me "I told you so" or something, but I shouldn't have expected it to all go flawless. I got the back covered with probably 4-5 coats of base. I waited about 1.5 hrs and laid out the flames, painted them, BUT... when I pulled off the tape after about 15 mins., some of the base came off with the pin stripes. I have about a 7" x 10" section and about a 6" x 4" section to repair from step one. I don't know what happened to those two area unless it was that I missed them with prepping well. I sure thought I prepped everywhere the same. Talk about a sick feeling in the pit of the stomach!

Patience Grasshopper...... you do need to give the paint an opportunity to dry before you lay tape on it then peel it off. You also may not have had it prepped or missed something. When you do your prep, sand, apply the primer, sand, wipe down with MEK or whatever you're using, one pass with the tack cloth and shoot it. Honestly, I'd wait until the next day before I applied tape to it for the flames, if not, you run the risk of lifting the paint with the tape. Sure glad your not my neighbor, my wife would be on me all the time with sayings like: "Look at the guy next door, how come it takes you so long to do anything?" I'd be forced to kill you. ![]()
