Default How much paint ?

A question for all you painting pro's, I am planning on painting my club car in a 50/50 two color theme. Obviously I will need to shoot a "fusion" coat on the plastic before primer, paint and clear but if someone could point me towards the amounts of the various material required to achieve my goal it would be much appreciated. I have pored through the various Q & A's on this site but can't find a single reference regarding the quantities of material required.
As always your informative replies would be of great help.

Chris.

I can help shed some light on the subject.

Ok first, dont mix store bought spray bomb paints with an automotive basecoat/clearcoat system. It could, and will cause major issues down the road. Depending on the spray bomb's reducer that they use, it will react with the base coat system and cause rinkling and problems when your spraying the good stuff.

What you first need to do is use a professional plastic adhesion promotoer before you lay down your first coat of primer. This will help bond the primer to the freshly sanded body, and will help pervent the paint from peeling and flaking in the future. Some suggest that you add a flex agent to your basecoat system (primer, base, clear) but these cart bodies are not a soft rubber like an automotive bumper or such, so its not needed, unless you want to add it in, its just more $$

now quantity of paints.. On average an cart body with 2 coats of base will take around 1/2 - 3/4 of a quart of paint. Depending on the colour and how many coats you need, as well as the spray system that your using, ie gravity fed, HVLP, ect... usualy i would go with 3 coats of base, the first being almost like a mist coat.

Just make sure you got your required flash times down path, and you should be good to go

Thanks for the help Monster, just to clarify and to be sure I understand you correctly ; I would require as follows. 1 qt adhesion promoter, 1 qt primer, 1 pint each of my chosen colors (Navy blue and silver white) 1 qt of clear + the appropriate amount of reducer for each step is that correct ? Ninja edit, I will be using an HVLP gun for the project.
The cart roof is not being painted btw.
Thanks again,

Chris.

Adhesion promoter, you wont need one quart. Depending on the make, and the application info sheet that goes with it, usualy just one or two thin coats of it will be good..

I use transtar mulit tie coat in the red can, it works wonders, others have used the bulldog adhesion promoter in the spray bomb, it works great as well.

But yes, one quart of each will be more then enough. The worst thing you could do is run out of paint half way through a project, then your screwed, unless the paint store is next door.

Your reducer will only be used with your base paints. The primer (usualy you would go with an epoxy based 2 part) would come as a kit, and have everything that you need to mix the 2. Same with the clear. so really if you get a kit that comes with a 2 part kit (ie for the primer, as well for the clear) you would have 2 quarts of each. Now if you can get more clear, that would be the best thing.. because depending on how much time you have you can go upwards of 5-6 coats of clear, and that would give you lots of oh-oh error space for your wetsanding and buff and polish.

You should have around 1.7mm gun to do the primer, and around 1.4mm to do base and clear... I have a HVLP gun for each of the steps, even a small one for the adhesion promoter, it helps pervent cross contamination when you come to do other jobs "if" you missed a small peice of paint in the gun when cleaning. lol

The most important thing to have is a inline air dryer, it dont matter if its a 1000$ wall mount unit, or a 5$ disposable inline unit, you need that if you want a nice job.
