Default Confused on Paint job

I have read all the posts on painting my golf cart and I think I got confused. I have a 95 Yamaha. I sanded the body, I filled in all the scratches and sanded. Did this about 5 times. Used wax and degreaser. I purchased SEM flexible spray paint, Bull dog adhesion and clear coat. I still have to purchase primer, any suggestions on what kind to buy? So now my next step is to use the bulldog, then primer? Should I put on 2 coats of primer and sand after each coat? I read I could dry sand but then a lot of people talk about wet sanding, could I dry sand?

Thanks
Lisa

I just did this.http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...d-p2060270.jpg Used Nason's epoxy primer. One coat was enough for me. Then wet sanded with 400 .You can dry sand if you want.
Then applied 2 or 3 coats of base and two of clear. No sanding on the base.
Go to Nasons site (http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/.../home.html)and print off the instruction for primer(421-19) and base coat (435-93)and clear(497-00)
That will give you all the info you need regarding times, sanding etc.

And "master 66" on the bodywork section will give you all the "professional" help you need.

Good luck and ask lots of questions. There is lots of help.

After screwing up my first attempt at color sanding and buffing I decided the finish was nice enough so I did'nt color sand and buff.

Good luck

Yes, I tok the body off to paint it.

Just a word of advice here though. If you plan to color sand and polish, I would take it off to paint but put it back on to polish- reason being that it is difficult to secure the body enough so the polisher doesn't grab it and fling it into the air. I wound up having to redo the cowl because the polisher caught the edge, flipped up up into the air and it got scratches and chips when it landed causing me to have to sand it and re-paint.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask question.s

One more suggestion here. I don't know if you are using a one stage paint i.e. acrylic enamel or a two stage base coat/clear coat. I have been doing hobby painting all my life and this was the first base coat/clear coat that I have done and I am amazed at how much easier it is to get a super paint job that with the one stage paint. I have avoided metallics all these years because it was difficult for me to get an even application. With base/clear it was a piece of cake.

Your cart looks wonderful. I was actually going to go with a similiar color but stayed with the red. I would like mine to look shiny. I can't find nason's products close to me. How about a suggestion for another primer? Also I am not using a gun, spray cans. You mention types of paint and clear coats. The Sem paint says color coat flexible coating and the clear coat is clear shot ultra build clear coat. Maybe I should do this in steps. I am done sanding it least I think it is good enough. Should I put 2 coats of the bull dog adhesion spray?

The reason I used Nasons primer is because that is what the paint stoe told me would be most compatible with the paint. I'm not really much of an expert on this stuff but the primer is pretty high build. After I primed it (it was so thick I had trouble getting it through my gun)I mentioned to the paint store guy that he didn't tell me what kind of thinner to use and it was kinda thick. He said you don't use thinner-that is the idea with a high build primer. DUH!

I think the adhesion spray goes on the bare plastic. I only used one coat according to the directions on the can.

There are others on here who have used spray cans. Perhaps they will chine in.

Regards

Fred

The heavy primer is kind of a short cut for body shops to cut back on shoot and sand.
If glory is rattle canning he won't find true high build primer. Glory you won't need high build primer if you have sanded all grooves and swirls out.

Thank you for telling me what you do know. Guess I'll just go back to where I got the paint and see what they have for primer and then just wing it. All I know is if it ends up looking like crap I am going to have a bunch of my guy friends giving me grief. lol Thanks again.

Seeing as how you are using spray cans I suspect your selection will be limited. I think the high build primers just allows you to get the thickness in one coat rather than multiples.

I don't know where you are getting your supplies but rather than a paint store or Home Depot go to a bodyshop supply place. They have the "real" stuff and lots of knowledge.

You should post your questions on the "Design Centre" section. Master 66 lives there and is a pro. I recall him mentioning that his paint supplier also provided aerosol cans.
As I was doing my paint job he answered lots of my questions.

I also read on the forum of one guy who did all the prep work and then took it to Maaco who shot it for about a hundred bucks. That's less than it cost me for the paint. Had I thought of that I might have gone for it as well.
But maybe not. I'm the kind of guy who always thinks that he can do anything for less -even if it costs more LOL.

Good luck

Sorry, my bad.

You already are posting to the Design Center section.
