pin stripes
I'm going to paint the front plastic cowling on my EZGO workhorse. Nothing too fancy, just using spray cans and making it camo.
I plan to rough it up just a bit, and apply a plastic primer before I start. I noticed some of the gold pin stripes has come off in places, and I'm thinking this might continue after I paint. So I'm wondering if I should scrape the pin striping off or just leave it. I was afraid scraping off the pin striping might make it too rough when I'm done, where leaving it alone would have left is smoother. |

Re: pin stripes
If the striping is vynil (sticker) you should remove it with a good quality adhesive remover, a razor blade, and maybe a heat gun (used lightly). If it's painted on, I would sand it off. Either way, the striping is no longer bonding to the paint, and it will continue to peel after you paint over it. In any case, I would remove it to be on the safe side.

Re: pin stripes
Thanks I'll start taking it off tomorrow.
I bought some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to rough it up just a bit. Does that sound about right? |

Re: pin stripes
The 2000 grit is a bit of overkill and more expensive than scotchbrite, I just use the maroon colored scotchbrite to remove the shine.

Re: pin stripes
Thanks.
The pin stripes are off. Plastic primer and the first of the paint is on. Because I'm trying for different colored branches, I'll end up with three or four coats of paint. First my primer, then a coat of rust color. I then use blue painters tape to make branches. This is followed by a coat of chocolate brown, and more blue painters tape for more branches. This gets followed by a light gray, which is put on lightly to get a little of the brown show through. Now I remove all the tape, and start with leaves. After all the leaves are on, I'll give it a real light coat of dark green to darken the entire project. It looks like I'm going to put on a sealer when all the paint is done. The way it is without the sealer, you can push with your thumb and get a smudge. It's more of a color change then actual paint removal. But it seems to me it won't take long for it to look bad. I've found a sealer that is matte clear, so I will not end up with a gloss coating. While the matte gives a little shine, from my test on a bucket I practiced on, it doesn't appear too bad. I think I'd rather have that then a lot of smudges all over it in time. |

Re: pin stripes
If the paint is smudgy you may want to review your recoat/ flash times for each coat??

Re: pin stripes
Maybe smudge wasn't the proper term to use. The paint is dry and has time to dry between coats, it's only the top coat that is affected.
I have a dark gray top coat. If using some pressure, I run my thumb across the cowling, the dark gray would turn lighter where I ran my thumb across. When I had the cowling covered in chocolate brown, before the gray was added, the same thing would happen here. The dark brown would become lighter in color where I applied pressure with my thumb, and pushed it across the cowling. No paint comes off on my thumb when I do this, it just lightens the paint. Not sure if this is because the paint is flat instead of gloss. |
