For those who said I shouldn't do it / wouldn't like it .... Wrong (Herculined Body)!
Well, I did it a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to posting the pictures. I couldn't be more impressed by how it turned out. I originally bought the cart for $500 (2001 EZ-Go PDS). I knew it needed new batteries right off of the bat. The goal was to make a lifted hunting/neighborhood cart. I plan on putting a bed on it for my hunting dog to jump into when I go hunting. I also wanted one to ride around the neighborhood and to take my daughter around when she's old enough. I went with electric because I already have a Polaris sportsman that I ride with my friends, and I just wanted another project to play with.
The plan originally was to vinyl wrap it in wetlands camo since I duck hunt a lot. I researched some and found a few kits for close to $300. That was way more that I felt like spending on something that I would probably tear up anyways. Didn't want to have overlaps and cuts up under the seat / inside the body. I also know that I can't paint to save my life. I would have runs in it and all kinds of other problems. Plus, there is too much prep work for what I wanted to do. I'm wanting to take the cheap route on this one. I watched the video's and I think they made it look way easier than it really is to apply that vinyl wrap, so I decided to Herculine it. I called a couple of places near by and asked about rino-lining and line-x. They all told me that it takes almost as much product to do a bed as a golf cart body (which is a total lie). Quote was $475-$675. Found Herculiner on sale at Pep boys for $69.99. My only concerns was the fading and it sticking. And the fading, I don't really care that much about. I can buy some stuff for $20 from Herculiner to "restore" or "prevent it from fading. I was told by a lot of people on here that it wouldn't stick, it would be too rough, and I wouldn't like it. Some people said that it would be ok as long as I prep'd well. It is rough, but rugged and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It really stands out. Here are some pictures. The day I got it (sat under a patio without running for a year and a half) Taking the body off. Sanded the body down with a scotch brite pad (Inside and out). Just enough to scuff it up. The Herculiner sticks very well. Cleaned residue off with Acetone (look at the bad scratches and lower part of fiberglass. Must only use Acetone. You cannot use any paint thinner etc... with alcohol in it. The Herculiner WILL NOT stick if you wipe the body down with something like that. The Herculiner Kit ($69.99) came with one scotch brite pad, you need a few more than that. I tried sandpaper, but you don't need it, nor does it work. 2 swipes with it, and it has so much clear coat stuck to it, it is smooth as glass. First coat (comes with roller and paint brush). Finished with it. It took about an hour to put the first coat on. It says that it will dry (until it isn't sticky anymore) in 3-4 hours after first coat is on. Then it is ready for the second coat. Due to the temp, and not being able to get my dad's shop warm enough, I had to come back the next day and roll / paint the second coat on. Directions say that if you wait more than 24 hours between coats, then you need to scuff it up again with scotch brite. I didn't run into this problem and the second coat stuck well when I rolled it on over the first. Put the body back on. Its amazing the difference / more rugged this stuff makes it look. It is gloss black and shines well in the sun. All in all, this was very easy. There are no signs of it coming off or scratching. If anyone is looking at painting their older cart, and want a more rugged look, then I would definitely go this route. I did 2 coats (top and underneath body) and still have a quarter of the gallon left over. If anyone needs help or has questions, just let me know and I will try and help. Now, I'm thinking about doing the roof soon. I plan on getting a camo seat for it and a utility bed. I installed the Jakes axle lift this week, and it is coming along good. Just need some wheels and tires. |

Haven't done any riding in the woods yet, but it's pretty strong. I've tried scratching it with a hammer and stuff and it won't flake off. I've tried to scratch it with no luck.
