Painting Roof
My roof is white and I am going to camoclad the body. What is the best way to paint the roof. I want to make it black and stick. It will probably encounter limbs while going through the woods.

Re: Painting Roof
Bed liner works great. Almost impervious to anything.

Re: Painting Roof
No paint that I know of will hold up as well as bed liner.

Re: Painting Roof
what a great idea! How much does it run to do a roof? Would weight be an issue? My roof wobbles a lot now...

Re: Painting Roof
DIY bedliner works great and much cheaper for a brush cart.

Re: Painting Roof
I agree with Bronco - and good GOD those "Line-X" guys charge a lot (around here I looked into using them for a couple of tops about 2 years ago, $600 was the best *deal* they could swing) ...
I have used the Duplicolor Bed Liner Spray with very good results, it's around $12-14 a can and You'll need 3 to get a couple of decent coats on the top and bottom of a canopy. Prep work is definitely your best ally here, Pressure wash or wash and scrub, then a stiff brushing and detergent, rinse as thoroughly as possible and touch as little as possible prior to painting. I have tried using an adhesion promoter and just wiping it all down thoroughly with alcohol and found no real difference long-term (but I would definitely do one or the other prior to paint) ... Work slowly and go light in multiple coats, the stuff is deceptive and won't run fast enough to notice during application but turn around 3min later and if it's too thick, you'll have a sag or drip. Dry time is listed as 24hrs minimum, I have found that relaxing and giving it 3 or 4 days really keeps it stuck on for the long-haul, it does tend to stay a wee bit soft for a couple of days. As to the roll-on version, it's easier to work with (sort of) in regards to drips, etc but unfortunately it doesn't lend itself to the irregular shapes you'll come across on a canopy - you'll end up doing some of it with a brush, etc and without 3-4 coats the difference in application technique will show up in the sun (yes I ruined a perfectly good canopy doing that once, LOL - took 2 additional coats of spray-on to fix it and I had over $100 into the project REAL fast) |

Wow Brew! I had 2 '96 Powerstroke F250 Ford beds done in the last 2 years at a LineX dealer here in So. Cal. for $500 ea. that much for a small cart top is sick. He even did the UV coating on them for that price. I did a DIY roll/ brush on our Bronco inside and it was cheap and came out good. |
