Default How difficult is shooting top coat over a base?

I have my cart body prepped for spraying and I plan to shoot it myself, but i don't have a lot of experience behind a gun. The finish I really want requires a top coat over a silver base. How much more difficult is it to achieve a uniform finish vs just a top coat/clear coat option? Am I taking on too much? Help!!

So I am guessing here that you are talking about shooting a 3 stage paint. The major difference is you are shooting a candy color over the silver to give it depth, and then you clear all of it. It really isn't that hard but you have to make sure you're gun is in perfect working condition and you're compressor is big enough to keep up in applying consistent air pressure. The more coats of candy you put on the darker it will get so you have to apply it evenly. If you're gun is not totally clean and working perfect you will get tiger striping because one side of the tip will apply more material than the other therefore making that side darker. If you can meet these two requirements you should be fine but you have to plan out how you will apply the candy to make sure you are not putting more product in certain areas. As always these4 are just my opinions and others will have their own.

Thanks Master66, I got spooked by the 3 stage, just wasn't sure I could get a uniform finish without the tiger stripes. Just picked up material to that is 2 stage. And thanks for all of your helpful replies to other posts. I learned a ton by reading the old threads!!

Good choice on the 2 stage, because if you never sprayed a lot with a gun, and your not good with it, the candy 3 stage is not the place to learn, what color are going with

I'm going to shoot it with a kind of burnt orange metallic. I'm sure that isn't everyone's taste but I really want something different. We live in a cart friendly community and mine won't get lost in a sea of black carts, that's for sure!
