need paint rework advise
I sanded and prepped the plastic body of my G2 and started painting today. Only have two coats on so far. The front panel looks ok but the rear section looks like colored sand paper. Do I just keep shooting paint on and hope it blends or do I start over with the sanding? (I'm using Valspar spray paint for plastic)

Re: need paint rework advise
Personally I would stop and try to figure out what is going on there. Did you spray the front and back at the same time or different days? If it was all at the same time there is obviously some sort of contaminant on the back. Is there any way you could post a picture so we could get an idea with what you are dealing with? Had the front or back been previously painted or was it the stock finish? I know I ask a lot of questions but just trying to help and it's kind of hard without seeing it.

Re: need paint rework advise
both front and rear sections had numerous coats of paint. The rear obviously was not prepped correctly underneath the first coat because it had large areas peeling/cracking off. I decided to sand the rear down to the plastic. Most of my sanding was with a mouse sander and various grit pads. I think, although it looked smooth when I was done sanding, some of the plastic fibers reared their ugly heads once I started shooting paint to it. I will try to get some pix.

Sounds like it needed a finer grit and cleaner surfaceforlorn to the first coat. I like to use the scotch brite fine pads- they work forever and mold to the shape you need. Also, use a tack rag to pick up all the loose dust and debris followed by a wipe down of pre- paint solvent. An initial coat of high build primer followed by another fine sanding and cleaning is best for a smooth surface that is even, properly sealed, and ready for finish coats.

Re: need paint rework advise
If you sanded all the way into the plastic and there are fuzzys you will need to apply adhesion promoter and then high build primer. You won't be able to beat the fuzzys down with regular paint as it is to thin. From there take Furious advise with all the prep and paint. I would still like to see a picture though.

Re: need paint rework advise
I didn't have time to do much with it this afternoon (since this is supposed to be my weekend project and little momma doesn't like it when I live out in my shop) but I did take a scotch brite pad to a small section and it looks like it will smooth out enought to finish and still look good. Master66, you are correct in that the little fuzzies came from sanding all the way to the plastic. I should have known better than to keep using the course grit paper once I got down that far. Oh well...live and learn the hard way.

Some people work really hard to get that look with truck bed liner though!

There's a G9 on here somewhere that is sprayed with bedliner and looks pretty good. You can get bedliner in red too.

Re: need paint rework advise
You could also take some 400 to 600 grit and wet sand it to see what you could get out of it if you would like to try to get it flatter. Once you see the other color coming through from beneath though that is all you are going to get out of it. It really all depends on what kind of finish you are after and what you are going to be doing with the cart. If this is a buggy that is for the woods or scratching it is no big deal then heck you will be fine. It is really all up to you how much time you want to put into it. Hey good luck.
