Messed up paint job
Hello Guys
2000 EZGO TXT that I repainted with Rustoleum rattle cans. Started with factory finish that was aged and scratched. I sanded the body, cleaned with paint thinner, used a tack cloth, sprayed with adhesion promoter, immediately sprayed with primer (2 coats) and hour later spayed three coats of color followed 45 minutes later per instructions on the can with clear. Long story short paint has krinkle look and clear is dull. My question is what do I do to fix it. I assume I need to sand it back to the original paint. Is there a product that will take off the fresh paint which is less than 3 days on. Thanks in advance. Forgot to add that the club where I use the cart disapproved the color which is navy gray, so I need to change the color to light silver Last edited by Blackdogracing; 09-02-2012 at 08:02 PM.. Re: Messed up paint job
It may be that you cleaned before painting with paint thinner. What's up with your club telling you what color your cart can be painted? That sucks! Hang tight and wait for someone with more painting experience like Master66. Someone will be around soon.

Thanks, the club only allows white, off white, tan and light gray. I thought the color I painted was acceptable but they disagreed. The said I could paint silver which I have pre-approved this time. So much for freedom of expression

Do you pay to be in this club. No club for me if I can't express my opinion with the color of cart I want. Go to NAPA tell them what you have done. They will steer you in the right direction. The NAPA store has to be one that deals in paint for cars. OR you can go to someone that deals with dupont or ppg paint. Don't do anything until you talk to someone. You can't just put any paint thinner on the paint. You might soften the fiberglass with the wrong thinner.

Re: Messed up paint job
I found the perfect solution....took the body off and over to the Mercedes body shop where a buddy says he can make it perfect. All it cost me is giving him a golf lesson and a dozen balls. Heck I'll even through in a cocktail after the lesson.

I hate to say it but yes you will have to sand it back down, Make sure when you do you don't sand into the original plastic of the cart as that will create a whole new nightmare. After sanding use wax and grease remover and not paint thinner for cleaning. Start with adhesion promoter a couple coats will do, and then let dry according to the can. When you do you're primer go with light coats to start and then get heavier as you go allowing dry times of about 30 minutes between coats. Let that dry a whole day before you start with you're color, do the color light coats first then heavy and let that dry for a whole day. Then come back with your clear and do the light coats first and then heavy. My guess is there was just way to much product on there with insufficiant dry times, then when you add the clear "which is the harshest of all the chemicals" it ate whatever wasn't dry below.

If you find a fresh body to start with, that will ease the pain of having to sand off all the old paint.

Re: Messed up paint job
I've had this happen with rust Oleum if you do not give it enough time to dry in between coats.

Here are some pics of the completed cart. Not bad looking and I upgraded the speed to 35+ on 48Volts.
