Am I screwed?
I got a little out of control on the sanding after trying to remove the remnants of an acid spill that took place before I bought the cart.
Would it be better to just buy new plastics? |

Re: Am I screwed?
You'll always be able to see that if you repaint it. You could use glazing compound to fill it, but with the work involved, I'd look for another one. Depends how much you want to work on it.

Why's that? It's really smooth and I can keep working on it.

Re: Am I screwed?
As long as it is smooth and level you should be good. Just put a few coats of primer before the base coat. If it dips where you sanded it and makes sort of like a crater then you will notice it after paint. I just finished doing some body work on mine and I used 2 part epoxy for plastics to fill any holes or imperfections and you can use that like a bondo. Using a adhesion promoter is always a good idea before primer and even before epoxy.

Re: Am I screwed?
Just a few tips because my guess is you will see a indentation where you sanded. Apply your adhesion promoter first over the areas to be worked on and then apply a coat of glazing putty. This product is like bondo but much thinner so you don't get pin holes. Sand it flat with the adjacent surfaces and then apply a very light coat of high build primer and let dry. Apply another coat out a little farther just a bit heavier and let dry. If you go with a couple of light coats first then you won't get the ring that will usually develop between the glazing putty and the original surface. Apply about 3 light coats letting dry between each coat and then you can apply a couple of heavier ones. sand with 400-600 grit and you are ready for paint. Also make sure you scuff all the areas around it with red scotch brite that will have primer on them so you get good adhesion. You can save this part.

Thanks very much for the info! :D
To what point should I sand the rest of the plastics to prep for painting? |

Re: Am I screwed?
well if it is in good shape and doesn't need any body work then the red scotch brite scuff will work just fine. You are just trying to remove the shine when you scuff it. And don't forget the adhesion promoter before you spray anything.
