Body appears to have factory paint is primer/adhesion promoter needed?
Noob, here to this forum, but I've spent the past 2 days reading various posts on this subject. I'm starting a complete redo of my 2003 gas TXT. I've had it for a few years now and swore when I got it, I would not get into the arms race in my neighborhood of having the fanciest golf cart, but I just can't help myself.
My immediate step is to get the body painted. I was going to pay to have it done, but after reading through this forum, I've decided for the same price, I can buy a compressor, filter and spray gun at Harbor Freight. I bought a used body from my local cart dealer, as it is in much better shape than mine, and it allows me to continue using my cart till I am done. Looking at this body, it has been painted over the plastic. It is a really good paint job. My local fiberglass guy thinks it may have been machine painted. Anyways, since there is already paint on the body, I assume I just need to scuff up the current paint before applying primer instead of also applying adhesion promoter? Would this be a safe assumption or is there harm in just applying the promoter anyways? Can I use the red scotch brites to sand this paint down, the same as the plastic? Thank you in advanced, |

If the body has already been painted and the paint job is in good shape then yes all you need to do is scuff it with scotch brite, wax and grease remover and then shoot it.

After re reading your post you need to make sure it has been repainted. If it is the stock finish then you will need adhesion promoter.

One other question, there are some fairly tight groves, how much primer is too much primer? I know we are talking about tenths of a millimeter, but at some point it has to be too much. Thanks again BTW. That caddy in your avatar is a burnt orange beauty. She'd be loved by all in this part of the country. |

If you are going to leave parts off that barely had the paint splashed on them then just use the promoter lightly in those areas. If the rest of the paint appears to be in good shape, no peeling or cracking then you can just scuff with red scotch brite and shoot and no primer is needed. There is really no point to spraying adhesion promoter over paint as it is designed for bare plastic.
Now with that said you can't really guarantee they used adhesion promoter before their paint job either. I guess unless you want to sand all their old paint off "which would be a ton of work" and totally start over that is the chance you will have to take. Odds are if it has been on there for a couple of years and still looks good then it will be fine. The only reason I bring that up is a paint job is only as good as what is under it. Thanks for the compliment on the 56 Chevy too by the way that was fun to build. It only had 49,000 original miles on it when I got it. |
