Carryall Budget Build
Hey guys I am new here the other day I picked up a Carryall got it home and started to work on it. Bad news from the garage... it didnt take long before I found broken case parts and a hole in the block. Good news is that its time to upgrade! I am going to do this on a budget. I am going to remove the motor tomorrow. I am going to cut some of the cross braces above the engine to make room for this swap. Possibly will be running a predator 420 backwards, unless I can convince my friends father to let me have the v twin 18hp in his old mower :)

Re: Carryall Budget Build
Keep us posted! I'm in the same boat. Bought a Carryall 2 and tried driving up the driveway and it wouldn't make it. Did a compression test to only find it had 35psi at best!!! Rather than tear it apart and put in a new set of rings, I found a 18hp motor. Your cart looks like a good one to upgrade!

Re: Carryall Budget Build
Much nicer cart than the carryall 2 I looked at. You can also try to find an older rear that is CCW, or run a jackshaft. 420/440/460 is the cheapest way to go, unless you get a twin used and go through it.

Re: Carryall Budget Build
I spoke to a local guy who was selling parts on craigslist. He was an old guy with alot of knowledge he buys and refinished carts and sells them. He said he had a older rear end for $50. He was not sure if my hydraulic brakes would work on it. And he said it did not have a locker like mine. So I am on the fence between that, a jackshaft, or just running reverse as forward and taking the 25% reduction in forward speed. Forward gear ratio is approx 1:15 and reverse is 1:20....

Re: Carryall Budget Build
If you hassle with a jackshaft you can change your gearing with it, but have to adjust the clutch some too. I dunno, I have only a few times I really need posi just the same it would be hard to give up. The CC CA2 I looked at did not have a locker or posi at all.

Re: Carryall Budget Build
How fast can you go in reverse with a 1:20 ratio with 18" tires or even 22or23 & staying in a safe rpm band for the engine to stay alive?
Also are this ratios posted only for the carryall ones or for DS ones also? |

Re: Carryall Budget Build
Yikes were going to have a problem here. With 3600 rpm and a gear ratio of 20:1 with approx 20" tire diameter (I guessed) I will have a top speed of 10 mph. That is not going to work for me. I am going to have to seriously consider changing the axle to an older one. Does anyone know if my hydraulic brakes will bolt onto the older axle? Otherwise I have to come up with a jack shaft set up where I can make the speed with gear changes seems like alot of work though.. I found the gear ratio by searching online for the specifications of the carryall 2001 model which I have. I have not looked up the ratios of the DS models I prob should find out what the axle is out of that the local seller has. I can deal with no locker in the rear end I CANNOT deal with 10 mph!!!

Re: Carryall Budget Build
Browsing around the farm today in search of a motor before I set out to buy one. I came across a couple victims that may be salvagable for parts. One has a 20 hp onan (which has been sitting for 5 years) it blew the hydraulic pump. The other has a 18 hp Vanguard which has been sitting for a year it also blew the hydro pump. I started the 18 hp last year and it ran well. The other I am going to try to start this week when I have time. Then I just got to get the ok to cut them up. Which motor do you guys like better?

The Briggs. Assuming the crank is proper straight shaft.
