Default Comet clutch tuning

Ok so it has been several months since I have messed with the clone cart. I have the vc 460 with the comet 780 clutch and an original 28 degree driven clutch. My question is this, did any of you running this set up have to do much tuning in order to obtain the low end torque that these clones are known to provide? I am running an 01 ez go workhorse with 22" tires and I have terrible low end with this set up. I understand I am turning a larger tire and the cart is heavy but it just seems like when I use this cart it jumps right to high gear almost as soon as you hit the pedal making it hard to climb any sort of hill on road or off. Any ideas on where to start?

Unhappy Re: Comet clutch tuning

After watching videos of other carts with similar set ups I am intrigued as to why mine is so gutless in comparison. Everything on this cart was worn out when I got it and I am just wondering if the old driven clutch is shot and needs replaced or if it is in fact a tuning issue, right now my buddy's stock club car will eat this thing alive from a dead stop

i have a 2001 workhorse with a 420 predator and stock clutching with 22 inch tires and i am able to spin the tires in gravel and dirt and climb hills with no problems at all, so you definetly got a problem with one of your clutches

Thanks for the reply, I am going to check with Darryl at classy carts here locally and see if he has a driven clutch I can try, I have a ton of cash in this thing already and just didn't want to start throwing $200 parts at it without a little advice from others

I would try to change the spring in the driven
If it is to weak it will go to high gear quick

When the driven back shifts is it quick or slow
It should be quick

Have any pics of the secondary? There could be a problem with it. The ezgo clutches have a spring that is tightly wound inside. Sometimes it's hard to get them apart after years of use. The clutch should be taken apart and inspected for worn parts. If it's original, it likely has wear on the sheaves and a weak spring. Either will cause problems.

How is your top speed? Without a governor you should be topping out at around 30 mph or so at 5000 rpm. I wouldn't go any faster than that unless you have the billet rod.

How is the fit of your belt? A loose belt will not have good low end pull. Your belt should be as tight as you can get it, with maybe 1-2" of give on the top if you push down with 1 finger. A tighter belt gives you the best low end torque.

Is your belt the right width? Stock ezgo secondary should be set up for 1 3/16". If it's less, it will ride lower in the sheaves and give you less low end pull.

I agree with slo! I ended up replacing my secondary spring and helix. It would not come apart (original). Had to get medieval on it to separate, but helix was tore up and spring was junk. Once replaced my cart had a lot more low end. That was with stock engine

Clones don't have a ton of bottom end, but certainly more than stock engines. If you get a $15 tach off ebay you can sort of watch it since they are slow but do work. Anyway, you need the clone to hit 3600-3800 when you have it on the floor, if you don't it wont go that fast. Most stock carts run about that or close, but not if something is broken or worn out.

Sorry for the delay guys, I had a breakdown last week on my semi that had me tied up in the shop for three days then there was lots of catching up to do once it was back up and running. Now with that said I am planning on taking the cart back to my shop this week and pulling the rear clutch apart to check some of the things you suggested, the belt width should be good because it is brand new from vc to match the comet clutch, as far as the sheave goes I replaced it with a good used 28 degree one last fall, the ramps were also replaced at that time but the housing itself didn't look great as I recall. I did buy a cheap tach so I will get it installed and try and get some speed + rpm numbers for you as soon as I can get it on a road that isn't snow and I e covered lol. Again thanks for all the input I will keep you posted on my findings

When all that stuff was replaced, was the spring wound up correctly?

If it isn't pre tensioned properly, there is your quick upshift issue.

See the link below for an explanation.
