What is best oil for clone
What is the best oil to use in clone once I get it broken in? Right now I'm using Pennzoil SAE 30 for break in period.

Re: What is best oil for clone
The actual Honda engine the clones are based off use 30w in the summer and 5w30 below 32 degrees. I used thinner oil (5w30) last summer and drove pretty hard with no governor & had the rod seize to the crank. I'm sticking with 30w even though I'm sure it wasn't just an oil issue that caused it.

I've also heard that adding a zinc additive to the oil will help protect the bearings.

Re: What is best oil for clone
I was told only use a zinc oil, that will be an off road oil only like lawn oil, off road motorcycle oil, kart oil, other special small engine or break in oils. You can also use a zinc additive I am, with synthetic oil. On road oil had part of the zinc removed.
Clone rod will not oil well if you rev them really hard. If you are getting close to 6K be careful you should put a better rod in, don't hold it pinned for a long period at that rpm. Most of the time you can't get that rpm with the stock cam, that is why they say you need a rod if you cam them. Mine will go over 5K but I don't think its over 5500 the tach gets weird though. I never go more than a few hundred yards at full tilt for a speed run, normally I don't ever go that fast when riding or only briefly. |

Hey sho, I found some Lucas oil engine break-in additive at Advance with zinc. How much do you put in with your oil change?

Re: What is best oil for clone
I'm going to run about double what they recommend, since likely they are talking about a car with an oil pump. So think my bottle is for 5qt I think I will use half of it.

Re: What is best oil for clone
We run SAE 30 on all our motors. Our job is to drive them hard, were are pretty good at it. However we live in the desert and rarely see temperatures below 32 degrees.

I'm using 48 ounces of 5w30 mobil1 EP with a tad over an ounce of Lucas ZDDP zinc additive in my 460 Years ago I wanted to know what the difference in synthetic and regular oils was concerning viscosity so I bought various weight dino oil and mobil1. This was back when mobil1 didn't have a weight class, it simply was mobil1. Anyways what my testing showed was at water boiling temp of 212 degrees the mobil1 was thicker than 30, 10w30 or 10w40 regular oil. Trop-Artic is the oil I used in this experiment. At our icebox freezer temps the mobil1 was thinner than the trop-artic was. Wasn't a nickels worth of difference in the trop-artic 30, 10w30 or the 10w40 at low temps or at high temps. At low temps all three of the trop-artics were thick as molasses and at 212 degrees they were almost as thin as water, The mobil1 is what I use in all my engines from lawn mowers to cars and pickups and have since it first hit the market back in the early to mid '70s The synthetic didn't change viscosity much at all from low to high temps, Yes it did get thinner at the high temps but not by much. On that alone I'm a true believer in synthetic oil. Then put in the fact its slicker and you've got a winner. I bought a new vw sirocco in 78 and when I made the first oil change and put the mobil1 in it the idle rpms went from 750 to 1100 rpms. I had to scramble around to find out how to set the idle back down, finally found a mechanic that showed me how to do that. If I remember correctly it took a long .06 mm allen wrench. I feel that if I can't afford the synthetic oil I can't afford the toy I didn't realize this was an old thread I brought back to life. :-) |
