I updated a 2003 EZGO to the 420 that Geoff sells at Vegas carts for use on the beach down at Crystal Beach Texas. has plenty of torque for the sand. I used the original clutch and added a 2 inch lift with knobby tires (original rims). Been very satisfied with the performance. Not sure about the idle part you are looking for.

I have a vegascarts 460, with their modified carb.I use it like a car stopping at stop signs and such.It idles around 1100-1200 rpms which is well below where the comet 780 engages. Can't say about some other primary.

Vegas 460, 780 clutch, new pipe and muffler.

On the cheap? Go Predator 420 all stock with 780 clutch. Won't be as powerful as the Vegas engine, but way better than stock. Should do you well.

Another option....just throwing it out there....used 16hp Vanguard with a 780 clutch. A stock 16hp Vanny will thrash the clones below 3000 rpm with the torque. If torque is what you want....go Vanguard.

Home depot carried the 18A charge 420 last I looked, would be nice if you get rid of the stock gen/starter. Really if you get the HD springs and 4 degree timing key they run pretty good with no governor, put some kind of free flowing exhaust on it. Vegas motors are a good deal and the kits are nice hard to go wrong there. The vtwin clone would be a no brainer but you would have to mod the mount to fit it, may need to use a lifted cart to fit it, it cost a little more at 600 or something at HF but its more power too. A 420 clone will go through sand pretty good way way way better than stock, though its not going to toss 50 foot roosters either.

Home depot sells lifan clones but only online.
