Bought a Friends Unfinished Project
It is a mid to late 80's Club Car. He was in the process of swapping the original engine to a GX420 clone.
I have a few questions. Right now I have got the engine in and lined up, but I am unsure of the correct belt tension. I have the stock Club Car clutch and belt installed on the engine. The engine is all the way back against the transaxle and the belt is pretty tight. I had planed to wire it up to be electric start with the key and always idle until you turn the key off. Right now with as low as the engine will idle I cannot shift the transmission. Is that because the belt is too tight? Or does the clutch need modified? Or is this not going to be an option with the stock clutch? About the belt, I see Vegascarts.com sells a belt for this setup, is that belt longer so I can get better control on the belt adjustment? Right now there is no way I will be able to use the vegascarts gen bracket as there is no room between the engine and transmission. |

to idle in gear you will need a clutch from a 97 and newer club car they have the idler bearing so the belt will spin on the clutch. I am in the process of doing the same swap!!!

I would take some tension off the belt. A clutch with a roller bearing will help but it sounds like you have the belt to tight. I would loosen it up and try it.

Re: Bought a Friends Unfinished Project
Yeah, need to get a little larger belt. If it's too tight it can put a strain on the crank bearings too. I wouldn't drive it much until you get that belt. Usually NAPA can help, take your belt in and have them measure it and ask for one slightly larger. Might have to try a couple to get it just right.
Another way to do this is to build your engine cradle so that you have some front to rear adjustment of the engine. You can buy an inexpensive belt from a common golf cart, set the adjustment up in the middle somewhere, based on the belt, and try different positions for belt tension. I usually set my belts up so that at rest, in neutral, the belt will turn 90 degrees around, or 1/4 turn. So if you grab the belt and twist it, you can then see the bottom of the belt. Also, if you push down on the belt with one finger, the belt has about 1-2" of give. Always works for me. |
