Comet clutch
Hello everyone,
I've got the 23hp big block in my early 90's club car carryall 2 trying to get this new comet clutch 780 from vc hooked up. I put the keyway in and the clutch on but when I tighten the bolt it goes so far and tightens up. However the clutch still has several inches of play that it slides side to side. Just wondering if a smaller bolt would fix this or if I'm doing something wrong? This clutch came with a ring and 2 washers but not sure I put them in the right spot. Just not wanting to damage my new parts. Thanks |

Re: Comet clutch
On my setup I have about 4 washers behind the clutch to space it away from the engine, then I have two washers on the outside for the bolt head to run against. That took all the slack out of mine.
If the crank is longer than the clutch, you'll have to use some washers to take out the difference. You can get 1" washers at Home Depot or Lowes. Just get the zinc coated ones, don't use galvanized. Stainless is good too if you want to pay the bucks. I actually went with the bronze colored grade 5 ones, and that's way overkill. |

Re: Comet clutch
You have to align the belt with washers or move the engine, or you may need to get a shorter bolt if you don't want to use spacers/washers on it.

Re: Comet clutch
Clutch from different manufacturers (not stock) may be different size, different design. If you purchased a clutch to fit X cart it should include everything to make it fit, if it needs spacers they should be with it or exact instruction how to get a common part to use at the least....or I would be complaining to the seller. But it is very common for the aftermarket ones to be different width or offset, different shape, etc. If the clutch is for general use or something else, then you have to make it fit somehow but lots of people can help here. I went from a yamaha clutch to an ezgo clutch. Turns out the ezgo sits closer to the engine on the taper, the yamaha has a very short shaft and sits out more to clear the block. But since I put a clone in there the clone crank sticks out more and the ezgo clutch fit better. I still had to drill new holes in my mount to move the engine over. It was nice now I have more room on the other side, the recoil was almost hitting the gas tank before.
