Default VC460 and High Speed Gears Question

I am working on installing a new VC460 in my Carryall 1 and am wondering about high speed gears. I worry that since I have to run in reverse the gearing is going to be ridiculously low. I am running 25" tires and this is mainly a hunting and neighborhood buggy so real high speed is not my goal, but I also don't want to top out at 18MPH either. I have a set of 8:1 here in my shop that I can easily slap in, but wondering if its worth it. Also not sure if the motor will have enough torque to pull the taller gears with the big tires and loaded say with two adults. Anyone have any experience with this setup?

Here is a pic after the initial rebuild but before recent tear down to install the new powerplant. I plan on posting a build thread soon as well.

The stock 420 I put in with 22s has loads of power with two men on it compared to stock. It will tear up hills. Can I run glamis with it, well of course not but with two guys on it still has twice the power of stock with one person. So I would say a vegas 460 would work fine with gears and 25s for any kind of semi normal lifted golf cart use. If you want to keep up with atvs then you will need a built twin just to start with.

I Agree with sho. My g16 with a VC 460 on 22's goes way faster than I need to drive it.
It is easy to start, idles great and has plenty of torque to pull.
I chose the 460 because of the ease of installation and the technical help from VC.
I don't know about the gearing just the engine.

I have an early VC 460 with 24" tires it pulls 5200 rpms where I let off with 2 adults and windshield up.This is 40.3 mph.

I was only trying to point out with the latest VC 460 that Skye should have no problem using the 8:1 gear set with the 22's if he wants low rpms or lots of speed.

I was only commenting I could go faster like you with 24s Ray But I certainly don't need to. 38 is getting white knuckle on my cart, it still goes straight but you start thinking, and I'm not 20 anymore lol I have those adult responsibilities and stuff, can't jump carts anymore.... But I did post the 38gps on utube lol.

Thanks for the replies. I just finished the install yesterday and ran it just enough to realize the "quiet" muffler is too loud and I need to add a return fuel line do to over flow from my pump. I did not install the high speed gears yet because based on my calculations the thing would run 50mph at full throttle (6000 rpm). That's not what I want. I can say this though, it has some snappy torque, just moving it around in the yard and garage it is 100% better and more powerful than the old FE290.

I think that was a wise to see where you are with the stock gearing.

When I bought mine I asked the guys at VC about the high speed gears, and the response was somewhere along the lines of "you can do that, but most will play with the stock until they get bored, then they go that route".
