Default lifan 420cc with electronic rev limiter

hello i have a quick question for all you guys running clones, my buddy bought a brand new lifan 420cc from home depot and when we had it running we noticed that when you rev it up pushing on the governor arm it seems lie it has a electronic rev limiter like a car and the rpms are not even that high maybe 4k or so, my question is can we get rid of he electronic rev limiter with a differnet coil or would we need a different coil and flywheel, thanks in advance

There has been some discussion about this recently. Search the threads in this section, you'll find them.

I might be wrong here, but I don't think there has been a clear cut answer to solving the electronic coil rev limiter. The last I read someone was calling manufacturers and Vegas Carts and didn't really get anywhere.

This is one of the reasons Vegas Carts designed their own engine line, to bypass the EPA mandated crap. The rev limiters are all a part of what the EPA is trying to do to control pollution. Geoff talked about importing the engines as "kits" to get around this, in other words, assembling their own "race only" engines is legal.

Brian Boyer did a whole lot of research on that subject.I think he got a flywheel and coil from NR racing. But I think he recently decided to start over with a vegascarts engine.Maybe he will chime in here with the full story. P.S.I went to NR's site and the no rev limit coil is $80.The flywheel must be a UT2 type.

That's the one, couldn't remember who's thread that was. Thanks Ray. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through. By the time you buy the Lifan, get a rev kit, carb, new coil and flywheel....you could have the high performance VC460 with a billet rod.

You should be able to purchase just the UT-2 coil without Rev limiter from NRracing..... I don't think a flywheel change is needed

Far as I know this is correct, its a copy (it seems) of the new honda system. That NR coil is to toss the rev limit on new gx390s and it worked on the lifan too. You have to use that coil (UT-2) with the UT-2 flywheel, or use the stock UT-2 coil. The new UT-2 has the magnet in a different spot the timing of it is different. You can use it without a key and time it yourself, some racers do that, they say it is off like 20 degrees or something from the old style flywheel. None of the old coils have rev limits, the old coils also do not advance the timing like the UT-2 does. The 460 is not UT-2 either. Advancing the timing is nice but not sure how much it helps you for peak power really, it mostly helps you run low rpm and still have advance at high rpm. But karts run a clutch and one gear so they do use a wide rpm band.

They used to say 6K rpm was the max for a stock clone flywheel, I think they are better quality now but most performance builds go with a light wheel for high rpm anyway for other reasons....and is why built engines don't use stock wheels. I don't know if they still blow up at high rpm, I would not want to find out, but thankfully I don't need to exceed 6K in my GC either.

Just touching back on this subject. You can absolutely use just the UT-2 NR Racing coil without changing your flywheel on the Lifan. That is how I am running mine as we speak....

This can be a big issue with people who wanted the HD 420 (or a normal one) because it has the 18A charge system, and still want it to run fast.
