Default Smaller clone in EZ-GO

So after swapping in a 13hp Predator into a 2006 EZ-GO relatively easily, my partner and I have decided to do a smaller clone swap in our remaining cart. It won't be quite as loaded up as the first one, no enclosure, no utility bed, etc. Just curious if anyone has put anything like a 6.5hp or 7hp in one of these. I did run across a pull start Predator 6.5hp golf cart on youtube that seemed to move fairly well.

The engine that we plan to use is a 7hp with electric start. Once I get the engine in, I plan to use a 3/4" to 1" shaft adapter from Flywheel Supply and a Comet 780 clutch from Vegas Carts. The thought process behind this is obviously to invest less money, but also the 13hp engine would probably be overkill for how this one will be used. The gentleman who wants us to build it will simply be riding it from his trailer to his boat dock and back, so mainly in the grass on mostly flat ground. I'm hoping that with the gearing of the cart and a good clutch, it should pull the weight of the cart around with no problems.

Pics and other info to follow.

The OEM engine has the same HP rating. You should expect the same performance +- a little bit.

Seems like a lot of work for factory performance

Keep us posted!

Dig around there are a couple people that put 6.5 in them, though one I recall was an electric cart to start with. They are ok on flat ground, you can use the cheap comet type cvt with them you can find for like 125 or something plus 100 for the engine its a deal. But you get what you get. You can find 420 clones for under 300 at times, there is another post on here about a cheaper ebay engine (clone) for cheap that seems to work ok for a stock install. If you mod them may want to go to a better one.

i literally need zero performance gain whatsoever, so I figure i'm probably ok as far as that goes. honestly the engine has been out of this thing for a long time now, so i'm just going to throw an engine in it and roll on. For the money I'll have invested, this thing should be great! Haha

We know a 6.5hp with a cvt will roll a cart around, not so good with only a gokart clutch you need the cvt of some kind. So yeah, if you come up with 6.5hp or more it should work fine. I say 420 because they are the cheapest deal for what you get, I paid 264 to my door for a lifan from home depot online and some are cheaper. You almost have to get a 6.5 to find one cheaper the 390 size is usually the same as the 420. So yes you should be good. Most golf carts are about 9-10hp stock some new ones near 12hp, for standard gas carts not work carts. Figure a 30yr old cart is down from 9hp due to wear and still goes.

I'm in the motor for under 200 with electric start, so my Comet setup be the biggest expense. I figure that a good clutch with a basic engine is more beneficial than way more power with a crappy clutch that won't put the power to the wheels.

Yes the cvt makes it happen, lot heavier than a gokart or minibike.

Black fab I urg you to watch a few YouTube videos of the guy who put a 6.5hp engine in a golf cart

Yes it did ok in the flat areas but really struggled on hills

I am running the vc460 and it pulls hills(really steep hills) while maintaining 19mph(cart tops out at 33mph on the flats)I checked with gps
This is in a 94 club car ds with stock gearing and 12inch rims with 215/40's(I think that's correct on the tire size)
Go with at least a 420 and get the comet clutch that Vegas carts has you won't regret it

I put a 6.5 in a cart.

The cart was a free electric with most the guts ripped out. 2 seat, metal body old EZGO marathon.

6.5 had the gov removed and exhaust. Eventually I put in a better spark plug, nothing else.

Bought a new old stock TAV2 torque converter. With two guys totaling around 430lbs combined it would launch really, really well! Accelerate hard to around 10 or so MPH. It would accelerate well after that but not as hard. With just me on it at 230 I could get 22 or 23mph on a paved flat stretch. It would reach top end in about 3 or 4 houses so if each lot is 100 foot wide (wild guess) then that's around 350 feet.

When my nephew (another 80 lbs) hopped on with us, the performance took a nosedive. So 2 adults, pretty good, two adults and one 10 year old, pretty bad.

It would not spin the tires in dry grass and I would try and do donuts and couldn't get the tires to loose traction, but it was close enough that I gave it a hearty go... I also changed the rear sprocket on the TAV2. Can't remember what I changed to but it's in the build thread.

Here's my original build:

And the first 'speed' run, before the better spark plug and with a partially flat tire. I was getting 21.5 that day on the GPS.
