Default Magnetic Dipstick

The Alnico 1.5 K gauss surface field magnets finally arrived today. I took a standard clone dipstick and removed the stick part. I then drilled it out to accept the .25 " diameter 1.25" long magnet which I slotted and pinned thru the dipstick handle portion. We shall then see what amount of iron particles show up on it as time passes.

Nicely done, Ray. I'll be interested to see what you find.

I have 17 hours on the oil in the sump. So we will see what is hiding in there starting tomorrow.

Hey Ray nice job. But would that be more effective if that was done to the drain plug?
Metal shavings will sink to the bottom of the oil. Not sure that dipstick is deep enough.

I have a fumoto valve as a drain. With all the turbulence in my high filled sump I figure if there is iron particles in the oil they will get roiled up. We will see.

Every little bit will help sense there's no oil filter or pressure system.

Well here is a 10 mile drive on my 17 hour oil. Facts versus arm chair assumptions. P.S. That consists of all iron particles. AND it looks much worse live than in pics.P.P.S For those who thought me being excessive with my 25 hour oil change schedule might want to look at this .AND those who predicted DOOM with my over filling my clone you might want to think what is in your sump right now.

Well to further examine this idea I took the cart for a 5 mile jaunt.Pull the dip stick again and what do you think I found? The stick is again quite iron coated this time with a more fine particle covering. I think this shows on any golf cart engine without a filter you may want to consider some sort of magnetic system. Another note and of you vanguard users that deleted your oil filter at someones recommendation might want to rethink that move. One other thought here is that since this does not force me to drain the oil to see the magnet it might be a better idea than the drain plug?

You have produced evidence of what I've said all along. The magnetic drain plug or dipstick will help prolong the engine life. Removing the amount of metal you have there will get less as you add more miles to you engine. When I did my 20 minute oil change on first start there was a coating on both drain plugs. That was 20 minutes -- now multiply to 25 hours and there will be a ton of junk on the drain plugs. Yes you can clean it every time you check the oil -- that's the best.

You put the bug in my head about iron particles in the clone. When you think about it the rings, cylinder, cam, valves, lifters, balance shaft, gears for cam and balance shaft along with the crankshaft are all iron components. Most of the parts besides the piston itself and the block and head are steel or iron.
