Clone governor removal
When I installed my clone in my ezgo I replaced the stock carb with a 30mm Mikuni. Since I was planning on using the mikuni from the start I removed all the stock carb throttle and governor linkages. I though by removing the linkage this would bypass the governor. A friend has the same clone motor in his yamaha cart and he smokes me. Recently I took my cart to his house to have him weld a new exhaust and while we had the seat off he noticed the rod that comes up out of the block that the governor linkage attaches to. He said that was my problem. My governor is still intact. He opened the case up on his motor and actually removed the gear. I did not. My question is with the linkage removed yet the governor gear still in place is it possible that the governor is still working and limiting my rpm and robbing me of speed?

Re: Clone governor removal
NO -- one shouldn't compare there cart to another for speed. You both have no governor hooked up - but you don't have the same exact drive belt or driven or primary clutches -- thus a variance in speed.

Re: Clone governor removal
Its usually about the gearing, different carts have different gears, larger tires are more gear, different clutches change it, etc. Mods to the engine change top rpm. Most take the governor out so the parts inside cant contact the crank or fail and grenade the engine. But if its not hooked to the carb it has no effect on it, it only controls the carb it does nothing else.

Re: Clone governor removal
Are the governor gears on these clones plastic like on the smaller 6.5HP engines.
Disconnecting the linkage, while keeping the gear in place, on the smaller engines is a NO-NO. The plastic gears like to break at RPMs above 4000. I wonder if the same is true on the 420 clones? |

Re: Clone governor removal
Don't know some have left them in. I know on mine the rod that comes out of the motor will hit the crank if it turned that way unhooked. The gear is plastic, its actually on the block cover. Its not hard to remove and you can tap 3/8 thread into the hole (the rod hole on top) to plug it. I just took pliers and broke the gear into pieces to get mine out, boom done. The first one I pressed the shaft out of the cover and took it off, pressed it back in. You must blue loctite the block cover bolts back in, I found out the hard way that they come back out if you don't.
