Heavier clutch spring with VRX-460??

Evening Gents! I am just putting in my 460 from Vegas Carts. Has anyone used a heavier clutch spring than the stock cart one ( on a g22). I would just throw the stock one on, but I don't have it and was curious the results if anyone who has not used it.

I have the umaxx spring on my G14 set on B -1 in place of the stock spring stock spring set on B -3. This resulted in a smoother take off with the VC 460 and comet 780 with about the same top speed .

Good to hear! Would you mind explaining what the B-1 and B-3 settings are? I am not familiar.

When I put my clone in my G9 I had a umax spring, cut sheave, HD kevlar belt, all on a whole new secondary other than the steel sheave was original. It worked great, because the clone likes to rev. If you put a twin in then you go back to the stock spring, they don't rev as much or don't need to. The clone likes to see 3500-4K when you floor it if you run the stock cam.

The sheave and holder the holes are abc on one and 1-4 on the other I think, you use different holes to get different degrees of preload on the spring. When you wind it up to the ramp to install it, it will be wound (preloaded) X degrees depending on what holes the spring is in. Its stamped into the parts by the holes its hard to see. One whole ramp is 120 degrees, or 1/3 a rotation.

thanks sho. Sounds like I should just leave it and give it a try. I asked VC about it and they said it can reduce top speed by up to 10 MPH and result in harsh shifts when decelerating.

When you take apart the secondary there are #'s on one side and letters on the on the other that the tangs of the spring go in. The different settings change the preload and determine the shift over of the secondary. I might also add I am running 24" tires on a pavement run cart.

Thanks Ray! I love gaining any knowledge I can. This is my first cart and lasted about 2 days before deciding on a full rebuild from the ground up, so I am learning as I go :) I will be running 23's (actually measure almost 24 with the huge tread) on an 8" lift. I will rarely ever see pavement though. My campground is gravel and PA legislation sucks.

Oddly enough with the stock spring I had a too snappy take off and really rough downshifts. So at first I wasn't all that happy with the comet 780. The take offs got smoother as the belt wore in but the downshifts continued to be harsh until the spring change.

I am not sure if this chart applies to Yamaha clutches, I came accross it reading up on EZGO driven clutch. It shows the degrees for spring settings.
