91 cc engine swap VC or Preditor
It's time. The old Kawasaki 341 cc is just not feeling well and its time to replace it. Been looking at the VC 460 kit and the predator 420 cc with a VC kit. Predator is on sale for $299 and i would save about $300 doing that. But at what cost? I would like to do the swap with as little fabrication as possible. I don't plan on racing so is 25hp too much or will I get decent performance from the 13hp? Is VC the option for a complete upgrade kit? I need to be able to get up a steep hill with a couple of heavy guys and be able to drive around the neighborhood. Reliability is important. This is the first step in upgrading this cart. I would like to do a lift and tires, dash, lights, rear seat, etc. The Club Car has good bones and the body is in good shape. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Re: 91 cc engine swap VC or Preditor
The answer to your question what speed do you want to run ? Also remember the predator as delivered is not really to responsive. Rejetting the carb, advancing the timing are 2 things that help. You also have to consider what you will do about the air filter and exhaust system. Another factor is whether you will happy with the governed rpms. If the answer is that you aren't going to be happy with the stock predator limitations the the VC 460 is the answer. To answer another of your questions is that it runs as well at 1500 rpms as it does at 6000 rpms. It doesn't mind running slow at all. Just make sure the throttle and the gas pedal are in sync meaning that you use the full arc of the gas pedal to fully open the throttle plate on the carb.

Sounds like the predator will need more tweaking. The VC kit without the engine is supposed to come with the exhaust and air breather for a 420/440 clone. Haven't talked to anyone at VC yet. That will be my next step. Thanks for the input! Are there any other "gotchas" for this swap?

Yes they're 300.00 more -- billet rod - torque cam -- modified performance carburetor - heavy duty 10 bolt block. I have 2 460's and they run great. One in my cart and one in my racing mower. I don't feel you would be disappointed if you went the Vegas way. They have everything you need on one site. Carburetor issues is the main reason not to go with the Predator.

Dont bother with the Harbor Freight engine. It can be done, but youll have as much into it as the Vegas Carts motor, it will take longer and still wont be as good as the VC engine. Just do it, youll be happy. I wish I had.

OK, I'm convinced. I just ordered the VC engine and upgrade kit. The only add on to the order was the extended throttle cable. I have about 15 to 20 days before it arrives. I will be getting the Kawasaki out in the mean time. Thanks for the advice. I'm sure to have questions when i get into the details of the install.

Its a great deal you can't buy those parts and put them in for what 460 costs, in fact you can't buy that HD block only from them. I have a lifan from home depot online and it works great, have modded it some, others here have used them they are a good clone. I bought before the 460 was around or I would have got a 460 its well worth the extra 300. Some buy the lifan because you can get a 18A charge system on them now and if you want key start that is nice. With the 420 you still have to do all the stuff, make or buy a mount and all that, so the job is about the same as a 460. Most all clones and the old honda gx it was copied from (except the predator hemi head parts, and the different bore piston/cylinder and crank throw) are compatible. The 420/440/460 are all bored and stroked versions of the gx390 that was raced and lot of parts available for them.
Far as power I have a stock carolstream 420 and the built up 420 and the stock one runs just like a stock cart with twice the power. It goes about 2mph faster than stock both with no governor, it has no rev kit just jetted carb and custom airbox and exhaust. It has a lot of power compared to stock it gets up to speed in half the distance and tears up hills. The modded one is little better but mostly it has a lot more top speed with 22s on both carts it will hit 38gps over the stock one at 31gps, just from extra rpm. The 460 should hit around 40 in comparison. I will be putting a 460 cam and rod in mine shortly here it already has a ported head and 1.3 rockers and 32mm carb and all that stuff. The 460 is just more of a good thing, it lets the engine run like it should in a cart rather than a lawnmower, had HD parts in it, slightly more displacement, gets rid of the parts you don't need. It revs a lot more and has more power all over compared to the stock clone. You can put a larger cam in it, that cam is a good all around cam little larger than stock engines have. I went with it because I use my cart for everything and can't have something that will not perform at any rpm from yard work to trail riding. That said I rarely get over 30 mph anyway. |

Did I say I was happy with it? A lot of advantages to this engine with some of them being that it is a solid design that appears to be indestructible. B--ls to the wall or mopping along at a snails pace its a happy camper. If in the future you need parts for it or want to upgrade it even further components are readily available and modestly priced. You really can't go wrong with a VegasCarts engine. simple as that. My install went so smooth that I was questioning myself in whether I was doing it right, it was so fall down easy. My son and I are thinking that we are going to build us a go cart and put one of these engines on it. he's just moved back to this area and as soon as he gets everything squared away we plan to commence. |

Re: 91 cc engine swap VC or Preditor
I noticed you had a filter/breather on the valve cover? Where did you get that? Can you elaborate a little on how you installed it? I have really enjoyed having the VC 460. I have not really gotten it broken in yet. Can't wait to see what it will do! I am using the Walker muffler that came with it and it is pretty loud. Is the muffler you are using quiet? What is your recommendations on quieting the beast?
