Default Yamaha g9 with new clone

I have a buddy who I'm trying to help put a clone engine in his G9 and so he got a brand new Harbor freight 420cc engine. I have put a few of these in but they have changed there engines since the last clone that I put in. Because of how far the crank sticks out I cant get the primary clutch any closer to the engine block. Its the way the crank is made now. its not 1" all the way to engine block now. This makes it so I cant move the engine over far enough to line the belt up. The air box rubs the shock and I don't know if there is a fix for this. Has anyone else come across this and if so, what was your fix? I have ordered a different style air box, but I still don't think it will solve the problem.

I use to get a 90* stainless tube with an air filter on it from Vegas carts but they stopped making it. If anyone has one or where I can get one that would be great.

Your friend has the ill fated 420 cc hemi identified by the square rocker cover. Most of the clone hop up parts don't fit this engine. If possible I would swap it out for the sort of hexagon shaped valve cover unit. I have an early crude 90 degree elbow from VC that is yours if you want it. It is not the mandrel bent stainless unit which I also asked about. See page 12 of my Vc460 build for a pic.

I would love to try it Ray. He will never do anything extra to this engine.

Hey Tom - here's an idea that may help you get the engine movable. You said he won't change anything -- I don't think he has a choice.

You can do something like I did on my G9 and made an intake out of a sink drain. Its a pain on a G2/9. You could run the engine and take a grinder to the crank and clear some of that out, but you need a true surface to run the adapter on. You can use an ezgo clutch the taper is recessed into the clutch more its at least a half inch deeper. I had to move my engine out to fit my 94c that was for a ezgo. You can fit the other clone style or honda airbox above the carb its called a hurricane and uses an oval paper filter. I took the filter off and wedged a piece of a plastic sink drain tube inside it, then clamped a hose on it to pvc and then to a remote filter. It is too weak to clamp on otherwise. That setup only sticks out about 1" from the carb inlet.

I ordered 2 different style air boxes and Ray is sending me what he has also. I hope that one of these things work to solve the problem. Thanks so much for everyone's info with this.

Tom, I don't get the issue with the crankshaft. Why cant you get the clutch next to the block? Is it tapered, change dimensions so that there is a shelf or ridge there? Help me understand that.

I had an EZ-GO clutch on the shelf and it made everything all good. With the way the the new crank on the Harbor freight 420 is there wasn't enough room.
