Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
Hey everyone, I'm new here. I just installed a Harbor Freight predator engine 420cc in a yamaha G9. I've had trouble finding information on here and online about the choke on the engine. I've installed the motor and wired in a pair of relays to start and stop the cart with the pedal switch, but can't seem to get the cart to start without turning the choke on (start position) under the seat and then switching it off (run position) to fully engage the carb. Has anyone figured out how to modify the choke to allow it to start without switching it on and off under the seat, after the engine is warm. I assume it should start without the choke in the start position, but that isnt the case with my engine. Thanks in advance for the help with this. I'm excited to get it back on the dirt roads.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
Most have a plug over the idle mix screw on the side of the carb, near the spacer. You carefully drill that plug out and then you can open the idle jet and it starts better and idles better. Or you can buy the adjustable carb from Vegas, its not that expensive. You would still need the choke in say less than 50F weather.
What did you need relays for? I put one on to kill it, that was all I used. I also made a rod and put it in the choke arm, made a rocker to hook the stock choke knob to so it worked like stock. But I don't use the clone carb anymore so I took it all off. |

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
I used one relay to run the kill switch and one to send 12v to the starter on the predator. The kill switch is de-activated when the relay gets voltage from the pedal and the other is activated when it gets voltage from the pedal, that sends 12v to the starter and starts the cart. That way it starts in stops the engine on motion from the pedal. There's probably an easier way, but I got it to work with two relays, so I'm happy.
Do you have pictures of the carb set-up? Or the plug you are talking about on the side. I've adjusted the idle mix screw, but mine didn't have a plug over it. There is a black plug beneath it on the side and a jet beneath that I think? 2 parts. Drill out that jet? Or the plug on top of it? Thanks for all the help sho305. |

Go to vegascarts site and click on one of the installation guides. There are excellent pics of the carb and where the adjustment screws are.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
Raydhd, I went over to vegascarts and read through the carb section of the installation guide, that was a lot of help. I don't have the idle mix screw under a black cap near the spacer. There is what appears to be a brass plug over something in that area. Is that what I drill out and what has the idle mix screw under it sho305? Thanks for the help.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
The screw used to be under there but in a recent build a member found they had eliminated the screw completely. The Vegascarts unit which is jetted up and does have the screw is only $30 or so and usually this carb is rich enough to start a cold engine without the choke.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
Mine had a metal plug over it, I drilled it out and screw under it. The other clone I had they broke a longer screw off and loctited it, I cut a slot in it with a dremel and heated it with a solder gun to get it out. You can imagine what I think of the EPA, all these engines then run lean which makes more NOx emissions anyway in addition to running like crap. Because we is two stupidz too ajust thems.

Here's a generic clone carb. Drill the plug in the green circle. 1/16" hole -- screw sheetrock screw in hole -- pull out with vise grips.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
I tried to drill mine out, turns out it didn't have an adjustment screw in it. I think I'll order the carb off vegas carts. Thank you all for the help. Until it comes in, I plan to continue bypassing as many EPA items as possible.

Re: Yamaha G9-Predator 420cc choke problem
Just get the Vegas carb it has everything you need and its not much cash anyway. Should be illegal to make them without adjustments IMO, but the government gods know best.
