Default VC460 Problem

My VC460 started running rough (surging) at 2000 to 2400 RPMs, the motor had 9 hours on it. When I speeded it up over 2500 it would smooth out. But it got worse, where it barely runs at all. I pulled the plug and it was black, smelled like oil not gas. I also had some oil in the air cleaner. Some things I changed on the motor are I used a AR 3910X spark plug, replaced valve cover with an AussieSpeed cover, and added a choke.
I changed the oil at 10 hours, it had 7 hours on it and it was as black as oil out of a diesel truck. When I get it home, I will check the valve lash.
I did put the original spark plug back in and it didn't run any better.
Any suggestions on what else to check would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Did you put a crankcase vent into the aussie speed cover ?

Yes, I did, I think I found some of the problem. The set screw on the choke cable came loose and the choke was stuck closed a little bit. Also one of the nuts holding the air cleaner to the carb was loose.

Are you still having the issue or is the choke the culprit?

I'm not sure, with the choke removed it seem to run a little better. I ran out of weekend and trailered it home. Had some oil spots on the trailer deck. The motor had never leaked a drop before. Now I have to find time to look at it closer.

Where did you install your vent fitting in your new valve cover. Try not venting the breather hose into your air cleaner. If it's pushing engine oil into the carburetor -- you'll have a black plug like you've posted. If you located the vent to low or in the wrong place this could be your problem.

I put the vent fitting in so it is behind that baffle or gusset. Blue dot in picture. I have a check valve and crankcase breather ordered to get it out of the air cleaner box.

I ran mine back into the air box, but its a car air box and it is below the filter. Oil would run down into the pvc pipe that supplies air from the front of my cart. So if it does I plan to put a catch can on it or otherwise re engineer it. I don't like the smell of blowby I'll make it work one way or the other. But you sure have to let the pressure out you can't keep it in.

I second the catch can with a filter idea. They can be had cheap. Do you have an adjustable high/low carb?
