Best kit for the money?

What's everyone's current thought on buying a kit? Is it worth it or is it better to put one together?

It all depends on what kind of motor u are looking at
What u want the cart to do
If u can fabricate and weld u can do it with out a kit
If u are looking at a vtwin u can find the motor used for around 200 or less but may need some work
I build my hole set up vanguard motor with mods for around 1500

I've looked into the Vegas kits and just can't really justify paying the price for conversion kit. My buddy owns a fab shop, so I'm trying to look at it as this: I want to just swap it out and be done with it but I don't want to throwing money in the trash over a couple brackets

If you know what your doing and what you need to setup a VC 460, buy the parts you need over ordering a kit. That's what I did. But I can tell you from experience - if you don't do this all the time -- you'll hurry up and wait for parts you thought you didn't need or thought you could build better.

That maybe the hardest part to it all is getting the build sheet right and not need part after part once I get it going. I look at the kit and just like there isn't much there for that price

If you buy a kit you will bolt it in and its done, or very close to done. If you don't it will take you a while to do it, I did two myself with no kit or anything before the days of Vegas kits. Slapping a mount in there I made was the easy part, the exhaust was the hardest. Though I did put an airbox in and pipe it to the front, and hooked that up to the clone. I put 420 clone in from home depot online, they were just on sale for 259. They work well, nice motor, though now they have a ut2 coil that rev limits at 4K and you have to go to nr racing and get the unlimited coil for $70 if you want to put a rev kit on it.

Hooking up cables and hardly any wiring for it is messing around but not that hard. Exhaust will break if you don't brace it to the cradle, and it will be loud if you don't use the right muffler. There are a few ways to do it, there are some long threads here in clones about it check them out.

Issue with CC is the 1 inch belt, they suck. They will work just not as well, and you are limited to the stock CC belt or one other belt length. So if you use the stock clutches you have to deal with that. You can buy a new clutch 1 3/16 and a new secondary, or have it machined to run the wider belt. Vegas has the 780 comet people like or you can get others, however if you use generator start you have to get one with the pulley or mount a pulley behind it (what vegas does). The 1" clutches come without the taper clutches have them (replacement for golf carts) and you have to cut the crank shorter and use an adapter, though its not that hard to do crank is not hardened.

So why use the 600 dollar Vegas 460, well its got go fast parts in it and a HD block. It has a mild cam, billet rod, HD springs, all stuff that if you buy for your 420 you may as well get the VC460 its well worth it. It does make more power, it will rev higher, it will hold together well too. Those are the same parts the gokart race guys use. In case of my yamaha it was over 600 to get my stock engine rebuilt, more for install, though you can have one out in like 20min they are pretty simple. And that was 5yr ago.

So is the kit worth it, well its a matter of time and screwing around. If you like to mess with stuff and can fabricate things you can do it no problem. It will take you longer for sure I had weekends into each one and I was in a welding shop. Sure I could do one faster now lol, but the kit is pre made, its way faster. I looked at a carryall it looked easier to do than my yamaha, it had a simple mount and plenty of room in there.

So how is the clone in a cart, well its about twice the power even with a stock 420, it gets up to speed in half the distance, it will go up hills stock power can't dream of. It goes about the same speed with both having no governors. But you can put springs and timing key in a clone for $30 or something then you just need that coil, or get a different clone with the old coil with no limiter. The ut2 advances the timing so its said to be better. When you mod a clone or get the 460 you get more rpm for more top speed, the 460 has a cam it gives more power too. I have one here going into my 420 but waiting on other parts yet.

The first clone I did the motor was $300 and ended up with about another 100 into it for the clutch adapter and odd parts, 10 each for the airbox and muffler from a boneyard. We cobbled up exhaust from black pipe fittings and flex pipe. PVC for the intake to the airbox. The second one I bought a roberts torque tubes custom made header, ran into a walker quietflow muffler for a acura, ran the same airbox setup from a chevy cavilier. I had the head cut and ported, timing key, 1.3 rockers, etc mods and had around 600 into it total. I made the mount, welded up the exhaust, made a gizmo to run the choke and throttle with stock cables on the cart. Later I put a new clutch on it and new parts on the secondary it was worn out.

Look at each part in the kit and tell me where you could find it for less. Of course if you can fab it up yourself there is only the material cost and the labor is free. I can say I used the Vegascarts kit on my G 14 yamaha and it was done in a day. I fabbed up a snowmobile swap in my harley cart and that took 11 weeks. Certainly cost less for the harley but there was a TON of labor. P.S. You can follow exactly what I did in what time frame in the sled section of big blocks.

The real question is how much is your time worth, how much time do you have on your hands and of that time, how much do you want to reinvent the wheel? Everything is do able. Just need to find out what you want to do and want you want to buy.

Alright guys I think I'm convinced with staying simple and getting a kit. I've got to many other projects that I don't the fortune to just order a kit for. Probably calling Vegas in the am I suppose
