Default Guess what I did for my Club Car today

VC 460 powered that is.

I replaced the blue springs in the 780r clutch with red ones and it made all the difference in the world. My take up rpms are at1200 rpm, give or take where as with the blue springs it was 1800 plus rpms. The engine has more than enough power/torque to handle the 1200 take off and in fact it feels much stronger on take off with these red springs. It'll set you back in the seat right now.

I just checked the hour meter and I've got 10.3 hours on this engine and I'm on my 6th oil change. I put mobil1 10w30 in this time. The first 5 fills I used straight 30w dino oil.
Before the spring change I was going low mid 20 mph at 3900 - 4000 rpms, now I'm going 26 plus mph. The engine seems to be much quieter too with this spring change. Before it seemed to be screaming all the time where now it seems to be loafing along. Not under any stress at all. This clutch combination is awesome as it shifts up and down effortlessly as the terrain warrants.

When I got to the woods, my morel mushroom hunting grounds btw, it took to the hills like a mountain goat both up and down. Very seldom do I have to use the brakes as the clutch stays engaged and holds me back. Nice! These trails are mostly trails I've carved out over the last few years with my cart and my stihl chain saw so they're pretty rough, rocky etc.

When I get out on the payment all hell breaks loose though. I'll be glad when I get the required 20 hr break-in so I can see what it will do at the higher rpms

Vegas Carts definitely have a winner with this 460 clone. Would I recommend it? In a heart beat. As my brother said today after taking it for a drive, this is not a golf cart anymore. I agree.

Everyone wants to drive it. Thats says a lot for that engine

And just think there is more, a lot more. 1.3 ratio rocker arms, ported head and adjustable main jet in the carb.

I'd skip the Mobil 1 and use straight 30 weight oil till you hit the 25 hour plus on the hour meter. It will not let the engine fully break in and lead to higher oil consumption then normal cause the rings are not completely seated. As far as synthetic oil goes I can see no benefits as the number of hours are limited to 20 or 25 hours. At that number of hours the oil should look like it did when you put it in -- clean, clear, maybe a little metal flake on the magnets.
If you want to run oil that would benefit your engine -- look into oil made for air cooled engines. It is very high in zinc diphosphate anti wear compounds.
I'm using cheap STP SAE30 engine oil cause its changed so often.

First I found this place http://www.mfgsupply.com/
Gave them a call and they gave me the number of Don Jackson, I think he is with Comet but not 100 percent sure, anyway his number is 608 774 0481
I explained to him what I wanted to do, told him I have the Vegas Carts 460, he was familiar with this engine and with the folks at VC. He consulted his charts as I waited a moment or so and then he told me I needed the red springs and they'd give me a 1200 to 1270 rpm take up. I asked if I could just go ahead and order them right then and he told me that I'd have to buy from Manufacturer Supply. The part number for the red springs is 302288A
The number at Manufacturers Supply is 800 826 8563
I called back to MFG Supply and talked to the same person, nice lady, and ask if I can order the springs, gave her the part number and my card info and three days later the springs were in my mailbox. $16.55 and with shipping it came to $23.55. Took me about an hour and a half to install them this morning. Much easier than I thought it might be. I never removed the 780R from my engine as that would have taken quiet a bit more time if I had. I was really concerned as the red springs are much smaller wire than the blue springs that came in the 780 and was telling myself I'll probably be right back in here as I was buttoning it all up but to my surprise when I fired the engine and when it hit 1200 rpms the clutch closed on the belt. I'm a happy camper now.

To each his own on that but I've used this same procedure on all my small air cooled engines over the years with good results. This engine for all intents and purposes is broke in, rings seated and ready to go. I've used mobil1 10w30 in everything since mobil1 first came out way back in the early '70s, back before they even had a weight designation it was simply called mobil1. Synthetic oil is slicker and there will be less wear with using it so for the cost of the oil I'll continue to use synthetic oil in all my toys. If I can't afford the oil then I can't afford the engine to begin with is how I see it.

Reading the specs on various oils including designated air cooled engine oil the next change I'll start using mobil1 extended performance synthetic and continue to change it at a 15 to 20 hour interval. 15 to 20 hours is a lot of cart driving, many weeks and even months. Check the specs on this oil and you'll see its a good choice for these small engines, no additives need be added.

In my 69 years I've yet to have an engine failure due to the oil and won't due to my not changing to fresh oil frequently.

I'm real happy with this change. At some later date I may change the roller weights, to give a quicker upshift. This engine has all the torque needed.
This clutch has 88 gram weight rollers/arms

OK -- I'm 64 and have been an industrial mechanic all my adult life. I worked as a car mechanic for Mobil in 78 when this product started hitting the streets. It did have problems in the first few years of use till people learned how to use it properly. Its a great product -- just not during the break in of an engine. It's too slippery and doesn't allow parts to mate together as conventional oil will. 10 hours run time is not broken in. I meant no disrespect - I thought you were a smart man -- but now not so much.
