Default Engine Test b4 install

I have been struggling with the engine swap on my yamaha g9 cart.

Ignorance on my part (I know so little about small engines).
Frustration with the weather (60 inches of rain so far this year and our normal is 48 inches annually--another 4 months til the end of the year.. sigh).

No garage so this is all outside under a shade tree and tarp. Bugs and heat with all this extra humidity.

And finally, one of the two engines I bought looks like it was dropped or damaged in transit. Makes me wonder if this other one works or if I'm trying to get a damaged engine to run.

Sooooooo

I have the engine back off the mounting plate just sitting in the cart.

How do I test it -- bench test?

Do I mount it to a board on a table or should I just sit it on the ground?

Do I put the starter belt back on it and use that in the test or just see if I can use the recoil start. (Might have to draft a neighbor to yank on that-- I don't have the greatest upper body strength).

I've tried looking through the forums and must not be using the best search terms. I get way too many false positive hits in the interweb search engines.

I just want to take a step back and make sure this thing runs before I go further.

I mounted mine to the VC motorplate and used an old lawn tractor gas tank for gravity feed before installing in the cart. Just don't have the 780 comet on there without a belt or you will have another issue. Just remember the clone engine itself needs nothing from the cart but a fuel supply. You only need a way to shut it off for the cart.

So I can take the clutch off, put the starter belt back on and test it..
or are you saying
I should test it with the recoil...

all while in the cart.

The drive belt needs to be on the 780 or it will over extent and can be damaged or at least tricky to get back into position.Without the comet on I don't see how you can use the S/G to start it. When i got my VC 460 I first fired in on starting fluid before installing it in the cart. When I bolted the snowmobile engine into the harley cart I fired it on starting fluid to confirm the used engine I bought would run before spending all the time to hook everything up.When I installed a new short block in my lawn tractor I did the same. It is great way to make sure you are not spending a lot of time putting an engine in that needs fixing.

I clamped mine to something and think I put a fuel line on it and just poured some gas in the line and held it up. It fired right up.

But I'd say if you have the starter on it then use that, its easier.
