Default Aluminum vs Steel tapered adapter.

I'm getting ready to order a shaft adapter for my 16 hp Briggs to go from 1" straight to a tapered shaft. I see they have steel and aluminum to choose from. Does it make a difference on what I use? The aluminum is a lot cheaper but I'm not sure how it holds up. Any one used one of these? What's your thoughts? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks
Arthur

Arthur,

Both steel/aluminum taper adapters accomplish the same thing. The difference is steel is a stronger material than aluminum.

Steel can take more abuse and can be reused safely. Depending on how often you take your clutch on/off, you won't need to replace it often.

Aluminum is slightly lighter and essentially accomplishes the SAME task as steel but will show wear/tear marks quicker depending on how often you remove your clutch.

Thank you for the info. I hope I won't be taking the clutch off for quite some time.

Wait..... is a stock clutch with the taper adapter going to work properly?
I thought I read that too much power and the clutch may slip on the adapter or shafted it’s only on by pressure with the bolt holding it, no key way.

I hope it works ok. I've already ordered my adapter. I won't be getting.crazy with it. If I have to I could machine a key way to fit.

I think it’ll work ok, but who knows when it’s under a heavy load, towing or a steep hill.
I have a brand new clutch set for my Yamaha from plowmans if it works for you it may work for me also as I have a 16 & 18 vanny to swap in. I just hate to cut the shaft down for it to line up the clutches.
A key way is a sure bet it’ll be ok then.

I'm sure it will be fine. I've done some research and have not found anything bad. It will be a stock 16 hp Briggs twin. The adapters are for up to 30 HP.

Can’t wait to see the results as it will save me money going this same route.

I have a steel one and had the clutch off many times, no problems. But I went with an aftermarket clutch eventually and had to take it off to change the pucks over and over to tune it. With the stock clutch I never took it off, so yes depends on what you do with it. You install it right and tighten the bolt, I don't think you need worry about it slipping. I think that would have been a poor install. 30hp is nothing sleds run 100hp on a 30:1 taper all the time. Yes that is higher hp but they go 100mph too so obviously way more power and only twice the rpm or so.

Wow! 100 hp on a golf cart is crazy and 100 mph on top of it. I'd like to watch them but won't want to be on one. Lol.
