Default Tillotson Diaphragm Carburetors

has anyone tried any of the tillotson carburetors on these clone engines?
Several years ago I put a HL 360 on a K321 kohler engine and it sure liven it right the heck up. I don't remember a lot about it but it was easily tunable . Best I remember it had a 24 mm venturi

I haven't used one of the tillotson carburetors, but I have a manifold for a Mikuni 38mm to big block head and a 38mm Mikuni Super BN carburetor. Diaphragm carburetors are great for out of position operation or racing. I got concerned about making it more complex and losing reliability. From the experience I have with diaphragm types is they work well till there's a problem -- then its what the heck is plugged up now.

For the most part the only difference between the two is one has a chamber that has a float in it to maintain fuel at a controlled level and the other one has a diaphragm that does the same thing. Many of the diaphragm carbs also has the fuel pump built in. Other than that they are the same. Same circuits same mode of operation. For years I shied away from them but at some point I studied how they work and what makes them tick and every since they've been no mystery to me and I'll take to one as quick as I will a float carburetor

I have some Stihl tools that some are over 25 years old that still start and run like they did when new. The saws, weedeaters and blower are used in pretty dirty environments. I had to replace the fuel line on one of the saws as the ethanol softened it up but that was shortly after I purchased it new back in the early '90s. Replaced the diaphragm in one of the weedeaters but what the problem really was was the screen in the exhaust plugged up. Once I figured that out it was an easy fix

Once it warms back up where I feel like messing with the carb I think I'll try a tillotson on my 460. Like I said years ago I put one on a 14 hp cast iron kohler and it livened it right up

At this link they show the break down of how they are made and how easy it might be to adapt a diaphragm carb to one of these single cylinder engines

OT: We have snow! A small dusting, maybe a half inch but its white out. Today we will have our Christmas Dinner as it works our for all of us this year.

I got the tillotson carb working very well on HD/columbia cart. But why use something like that when there are so many proven ways of making power using mikunis of some sort or another for the 460 ? P.S. Shoot Russell Thompson at NRracing an email. He uses and sells tillotsons, mikunis, and honda and honda clones cars in all sorts of tune states. Why guess when you can get info from a pro that does tons of engines.

In my case its the fun factor I'm after
I enjoy trying new things whether I stay with it or not at least I will most likely have learned something
The tillotson I put on the old kohler sure made it into a different animal. Wish I still had it

OT: One inch of snow this morning. Pretty out. I'm like a kid when it comes to snow. If not for being so cold out this morning I'd get the DS out and spin and slide around some. You can bet when and if we do get a good 4 plus inch snow I'll be out in it no matter what LOL

Lot of the old sleds used them, had one that was over 25yr old and still ran fine. They do use them on race clones all the time, particularly for alcohol.
